Vickie Phillips to Bring SONGS ARE LIKE FRIENDS II to Don't Tell Mama, 10/1Vickie Phillips to Bring SONGS ARE LIKE FRIENDS II to Don't Tell Mama, 10/1
by BWW News Desk - Sep 4, 2013

There's something about old-timers that makes them special. They know how to deliver a song, they know how to relate to their audience, and they know how to put a show together....Yet, terming it her 'show' doesn't convey it properly. It was as much a soiree with a roomful of invited guests as anything Vickie Phillips would have had in a spacious Park Avenue residence....she internalized her songs and her renditions displayed the emotions - sometimes funny, sometimes sad - with palpable involvement....Phillips filled the evening with mirth, affection, emotion and some songs to relish. Who could ask for more?' - Peter Leavy, Cabaret Scenes, July 9, 2013 (more...)

BWW Review: WHAT MAKES A MAN at the Berkley Street TheatreBWW Review: WHAT MAKES A MAN at the Berkley Street Theatre
by Dennis Kucherawy - Oct 22, 2014

While reviewing What Makes a Man (WMAM), now playing at the Berkley Street Theatre, it's tempting to comment on what's not there, what could and should be there, rather than what is there. What is on display is a marvelous musical stage portrait of Charles Aznavour, the world renowned French singer/songwriter, actor and political activist/diplomat. A man of the world, he is capable of singing in five languages. One of the last surviving 'showmen,' he still is capable of filling the world's most prestigious concert halls. For example, a year ago he performed for the first time in 25 years at London's Royal Albert Hall. Demand was so great, a second concert was booked there for this past June. (more...)

Now that the legendary Elaine Stritch and Julie Wilson have retired from performing, the only celebrity 80-plusers who have been performing regularly on the cabaret circuit are the equally legendary Barbara Cook and Marilyn Maye. But now there's another octogenarian on the scene and while he may not be a legend, George Marcy is an 86-year-old former Broadway musical theater actor/dancer who recently staged a totally charming and entertaining show at Don't Tell Mama. BWW Reviews: MARK NADLER Is Deliciously Scandalous As His New Show Transforms 54 Below Into a Decadent Jazz Age SpeakeasyBWW Reviews: MARK NADLER Is Deliciously Scandalous As His New Show Transforms 54 Below Into a Decadent Jazz Age Speakeasy
by Stephen Hanks - May 1, 2014

When Mark Nadler last performed a solo show at 54 Below, it was a very personal musical exploration of Germany's Weimar Republic of the 1920s, a place and an atmosphere that was dark, dangerous and decadent. I'm a Stranger Here Myself was such a compelling tour de force that it was expanded into a highly praised off-Broadway piece that Nadler staged at the York Theatre last Spring. Nadler's new 54 Below effort, Runnin' Wild: Songs & Scandals of the Roaring Twenties, (which opened last Sunday, ran last night, and will also play on May 7 at 9:30pm and May 14 at 7pm) is like a playful and debauched sequel to Stranger, only in this show—which would be more aptly titled “Reckless Abandon”--Nadler is clearly a gleeful member of the club. To this passionate piano man, America's big cities in the pre-Depression era 1920s were happy, hungry, and hedonistic. There was always a party filled with sex, drugs and booze looking for a place to happen. And goodness knows, Mark Nadler wishes he'd been invited to every one of them. But since he was born too late, all he can do is serve as congenial host in re-creating the speakeasy ambiance and in this show he manages to accomplish that--only without the sex and drugs. Damn!
