Theater suffered a huge loss this week when the playwright Terrence McNally died at 81, of complications of our current plague, the coronavirus. It was a sad irony since many of McNally's plays dealt with the effects of a previous plague, AIDS, in the 1980s.

Birdland Jazz Club and Birdland Theater have announced their lineup of artists for March 16 through March 29: 

Artists appearing at Birdland Jazz Club include John Pizzarelli (The Swing 7 and Quartet), Steve Ross, Erena Terakubo and Nana Quintet, Leanne Borghesi & Marta Sanders, Constantine Maroulis, Michelle Lordi and David Berger Orchestra.

After announcing their first North American tour dates last month, CocoRosie (Sierra and Bianca Casady) are sharing a fourth new track “Restless” along with a music video (directors CocoRosie, editor Amy von Harrington) which is filled with rollerblading fun.

Manhattan musical duo Michael Garin and Mardie Millit have been known to stir up delicious musical mayhem wherever they go. Michael is a Drama Desk Award-winning composer/lyricist (for Song of Singapore) and Emerson College dropout who has made a living entertaining New Yorkers, playing the piano and singing at the Monkey Bar, the Rainbow Room, the VIP room at Limelight, and the Williamstown Theater Festival, to name a few. Mardie has a degree in Classical Voice from The Ohio State University and spent many years playing roles like Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and Maria in The Sound of Music in regional theatres around the country before embarking on a cabaret career. They met each other at Jim Caruso's Cast Party at Birdland in 2005 and began performing together soon after, most notably on Sunday nights at the legendary Elaine's, from 2008 until its closing in 2011.

Today, CocoRosie (Sierra and Bianca Casady) announce their first North American tour dates in honor of their upcoming album Put The Shine On (pre-order HERE). In April, they will play their new music and old favorites in one-of-a-kind live shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York.

One of the most impactful theatre experiences I've had in the last year was seeing the Gettysburg Community Theatre Penguin Project's production of The Wizard of Oz. I have been looking forward to their next production, and it is finally upon us. Between the teamwork displayed by the actors, the passion they put into their acting and singing, and the support of the audience, it is a magical time. Starting on August 16th, GCT's Penguin Project will be bringing Madagascar: A Musical Adventure, Jr. to the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center in Hanover. Madagascar is based on the 2005 animated DreamWorks film. It features a group of lovable animals at the Central Park Zoo. Marty the zebra longs for adventure, and boy does he get one-along with his friends Alex, Melman, and Gloria, they end up in Madagascar. Today, fresh from their Chance The Rapper collaboration, CocoRosierelease their first new song in 2 years called “Lamb & the Wolf”. The legendary theater director, visual artist and their frequent collaborator, Robert Wilson created the artwork for “Lamb & the Wolf”. It was created to help UCF continue their mission of finding a cure for cancer using immunotherapy and targeted treatments.

It's been nearly seven years since Americana singer/songwriter Chuck Ragan and his camaraderie of like-minded musicians celebrated his much-adored and lauded REVIVAL TOUR which merged the punk, alternative, and folk worlds and borne a jamboree of music and collaboration.  So it is with excitement and anticipation that Chuck Ragan and Revival Tour alums Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) and Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) are getting together to put on AN EVENING OF REVIVAL, a one-time “revival” of sorts of the much-missed tour.  Set for Sunday, July 7th at Solana Beach, CA's Belly Up (143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach, CA 92075), it proves to be one of the must-attend shows of the season, if not year.
