Lili Mahoney Releases BAREFOOT PASTURESLili Mahoney Releases BAREFOOT PASTURES
by BWW News Desk - Jun 26, 2015

The idea of a girl living in an area that is quickly outgrowing its heritage is very similar to where author Lili Mahoney lives. As she watches her daughter grow, she creates a tale loosely based on the experiences of her young life. 'Barefoot Pastures' (published by Xlibris) is a compelling story of a girl and her horse whose goal in life is simple - fight to hold onto their title as the best barrel racing team in the state. BWW Review: THE FLICK is an Envelope-Pushing Must-See for All Serious Orlando Theatre FansBWW Review: THE FLICK is an Envelope-Pushing Must-See for All Serious Orlando Theatre Fans
by Matt Tamanini - Jun 25, 2015

The vast majority of theatre, even straight plays, has an intrinsic musicality that has become an engrained part of the art form; characters speak with an expected rhythm familiar to regular theatre viewers, dialogue is paced with a conventional choreography to which the audience has grown accustomed. While most playwrights strive for a heightened level of lyrical poetry from their scripts, Annie Baker's THE FLICK, by design, has no rhythm, nor choreography, nor poetry; what it has is uncomfortable reality. Since its debut in 2013, THE FLICK, presented at The Dr. Phillips Center through July 12th by Gen Y Productions, has amassed a devoted following and a Pulitzer Prize, but has also drawn the ire of many theatre-goers, who, frustrated by its unorthodoxy, leave the theater before the show is over. While THE FLICK, directed here by Tony-winning producer Kenny Howard, does have the occasional profanity and risque topics, it is nothing compared to that of theatre greats like David Mamet or Tracy Letts; no, the objection to THE FLICK is not because of its content, but because of how its content is presented. BWW Feature: PICKLES THE PLAY at FringeNYCBWW Feature: PICKLES THE PLAY at FringeNYC
by Katelyn Corp - Jun 25, 2015

The New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC), North America's largest multi-arts festival, celebrates its 19th anniversary this August 14th-30th. This year, two talented former Community College of Rhode Island students are representing what the Rhode Island theatre community has to offer with their original play Pickles. Playwrights and co-stars Laura Minadeo and Alexander Rotella and their enthusiastic cast are spending their summer preparing for this huge opportunity. I was lucky enough to sit in on a fight choreography session to watch the playwrights and some of the cast in action. Before they got started, Laura, Alex, their close friend and castmate Erin Archer, and I sat down to talk about how Pickles was conceived, their journey so far to FringeNYC, and what the next few months have in store. BWW Reviews: ONCE Is Not Your Typical Broadway Musical, Using Music Organically to 'Speak and Sing of What It Is to Be Human'BWW Reviews: ONCE Is Not Your Typical Broadway Musical, Using Music Organically to 'Speak and Sing of What It Is to Be Human'
by Jill Schafer - Jun 24, 2015

There's no big opening number, no splashy dance with dozens of chorus girls and boys, no pit orchestra, no large moving set pieces, no colorful glamorous costumes. ONCE is not your typical musical. In fact, according to The Cherry and Spoon Music-Theater Spectrum it's not a musical at all, but rather a play with music. Yet this atypical not-really-a-musical musical won eight Tony Awards in 2012. Why is that? Why was this quiet and quirky musical based on a little Irish movie awarded Broadway's biggest prize? Perhaps because it is different from other musicals. Perhaps the voters awarded the creative and organic way music is used to tell this beautifully simple and non-traditional love story. ONCE is a new kind of music-theater, and proves that musicals don't always have to be big and loud to have a profound effect on the audience. ONCE is quietly, beautifully stirring. (more...)
