Based on the film Passione d'Amore directed by Ettore Scola

Based on the novel Fosca by I. U. Tarchetti

PASSION, winner of 4 Tony Awards including Best Music and Lyrics, Best Book, and Best Musical, features music and lyrics by the acclaimed Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Company, Follies, Into The Woods, Gypsy) and book by James Lapine (Falsettos, Into The Woods, Sunday In The Park With George).

PASSION opened on Broadway in 1994, and received its London revival in 2010 at the Donmar Warehouse as part of Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday celebrations.

Stephen Sondheim's PASSION revolves around a handsome Italian solider, Giorgio, separated from his beautiful mistress, who is shattered and ultimately changed by the unconditional and obsessive love of Fosca, his Colonel's chronically ill and plain cousin. Her unrelenting passions force him to re-evaluate his beliefs about love and attraction between two human beings.

Step back in time for a night of gothic sets, raving lunatics, heroes and heroines; And of course, you can Count on a vampire or two. Bram Stoker's Dracula receives a Rocky Horror refresh, in this latest season at the Genesian Theatre. Being a seminal classic, The Genesian Theatre stalls are the perfect location for this eerie and looming production that feels it may swallow you up at any moment. An evening equally spooky as entertaining, director Michael Heming has stayed true to the years of interpretations of the evil Count Dracula. Classical elements abound in the production and characterisation to make for a nostalgic night. (more...)

BWW Review: Dark Gritty Infidelity in Sidecountry's MURDER BALLAD
by Jay Irwin - Oct 24, 2016

Sometimes some of the best shows out there are the cult followed ones, the ones that are really only known by niche groups or musical theater nerds. While mainstream audiences may go to shows about green girls or founding fathers, there are other audiences who travel off the beaten path to see shows Off-Broadway (or even Off-Off=Broadway) but those shows don't always get a life after their Off-Broadway Runs. Such a show could be the successful but short lived show "Murder Ballad". Luckily there are companies such as Sidecountry Theatre who take on these gems regionally the same way they tackled the brilliant "Passing Strange" a little while ago. And they tackle them with not only talent but also the obvious love and respect for a piece that deserves a wider audience. (more...)

BWW Review: KINKY BOOTS - Fun Frivolity and Frisky Freedom
by Tim Carney - Oct 24, 2016

In June 2013 two musicals went head to head in the best musical category at the Tony Awards. One would win but both would leave their mark in the musical theatre industry as being truly special shows. Kinky Boots and Matilda are currently playing a block away from each other in Melbourne and moving audiences in their own unique way. Last night it was Kinky Boots' turn, in an opening night extravaganza, which not only lived up to its Tony Award winning billing but smashed it out of the ballpark. There is nothing particularly unique about the shows storyline, based on the 2005 film, but it has every successful ingredient of major Broadway successes before it and then throws in a truckload of glitter and fun to leave audiences feeling euphoric. Last nights opening night audience started leaping to their feet early on in the show after Land of Lola and remained there at the shows conclusion. It what was the most deserved standing ovation. Dimitris Ballas, author of the new book 'Kill the Carnal Mind', is an observer of the present world and avid proponent of peace. Dimitris is very disturbed by the stupidity of men to have accepted some ways of living. The author lives a life full of spiritual and physical experiences. BWW Review: MARAT/SADE Rebels and Reaches for the Heartstrings at New Theatre
by Brodie Paparella - Oct 24, 2016

Part LES MISERABLES, part Quills, part Australia's backyard, Marat/Sade is a raucous and real-life inspection into the lives of the politically disenfranchised, told through the inmates of what was in Peter Weiss' 1960s original the asylum of Charenton, but in Barry French's direction, could be any detention centre dotting the Asia Pacific. A madcap meta-musical repurposing historic cruelty for the new age, Marat/Sade is a fantastic experience for audiences to get up close and personal with. (more...)

BWW Review: Powerful and Evocative World Premiere ROZ AND RAY at Seattle Rep
by Jay Irwin - Oct 24, 2016

Powerful plays such as "Angels in America" and "The Normal Heart" have driven right to the heart of the AIDS epidemic by spotlighting the ignorance and bureaucracy at the center of the disease which allowed it to spiral out of control so quickly. But beyond the gay community there was another group on the periphery of this pandemic that were hit equally hard and in some ways worse in those early days when the President even refused to say the word AIDS in public. The hemophiliacs. The Seattle Rep's new World Premiere play "Roz and Ray" offers up a peek inside that world and creates a powerful look at the kind of harm people with the best intentions can do. BWW Review: Chekhov on the Delaware: Perfectly Calibrated Durang Play Opens Good Theater's 15th Season
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Oct 24, 2016

During the first act of Christopher Durang's Tony award-winning 2013 play, Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike, the characters muse that 'if everyone were on anti-depressants, there would be no Chekhov.' Happily for Portland theatre goers, it seems that none of the six colorful, endearing, eccentric personages in Durang's contemporary comedy appears to be on any medication. Rather they squabble and moan and rant about their lives in absurdly clever and humorous dialogue as they struggle to find some happiness in the human bonds which connect them. (more...)
