MoMA to Screen Over 60 Feature Films in Honor of 100th Anniversary of TechnicolorMoMA to Screen Over 60 Feature Films in Honor of 100th Anniversary of Technicolor
by BWW News Desk - May 8, 2015

Technicolor is truly the stuff that dreams are made on. “My first memories of movies are in Technicolor,” Martin Scorsese said. “Duel in the Sun was the first picture I ever saw, and it's never left me—reds, blues, greens, yellows, deep blacks, lustrous golds. There doesn't appear to be any blending of color in that picture—everything is primary, and everything is alive. It may be garish, it's certainly unreal, and it's far from subtle, but it's alive. Alive…. To me, that's Technicolor.” (more...)

BWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Brings THE PHILADELPHIA STORY SouthBWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Brings THE PHILADELPHIA STORY South
by Joseph Baker - Apr 27, 2015

George Cukor's 1940 film version of Philip Barry's THE PHILADELPHIA STORY was Katharine Hepburn's return to glory after the actress had been labeled 'box office poison' after the failure of several films. 021The savvy Hepburn was able to bend MGM to her will when it wanted to film Barry's play, and the end result rewarded everyone involved: Hepburn, her old RKO co-star Cary Grant, and the up and coming James Stewart. Not only were Oscar nominations and wins in store, but at the center of it all was Hepburn in all her patrician, high cheek-boned elegance. She may have given greater performances as the tragic, dope-addicted 'Mary Tyrone' in the film version of Eugene O'Neill's LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT or as the caustic, sparring 'Eleanor of Aquitaine' in James Goldman's THE LION IN WINTER, but for those who want to see Hepburn at the height of her unusual beauty and comedic gifts, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY is a must. Having seen the film numerous times, I was wary of Theatre Memphis' staging of Barry's work. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, once seen, leaves such an impression that it's rather like tackling a remake of The Wizard of Oz or GONE WITH THE WIND or THE GODFATHER. Director Jason Spitzer has taken the dare, and he and his cast have mostly succeeded in the satiny, stylized production currently playing at Theatre Memphis. (more...)

SOUND OFF Special Edition: Little Shop Of Horrors! 10 Devilish & Demonic Plays & Musicals To DevourSOUND OFF Special Edition: Little Shop Of Horrors! 10 Devilish & Demonic Plays & Musicals To Devour
by Pat Cerasaro - Apr 22, 2015

While Broadway is heaven for theatergoers around the world, especially when the season reaches its fever pitch as it is right now, it can also be hell in the right hands. And, that's a good thing. As the exceedingly well-received new play HAND TO GOD which opened earlier this month proves, audiences adore a good scare - particularly when it is supported by a rich and dynamic dramatic basis upon which the horror-show can play out, which HAND TO GOD undoubtedly has in spades (and pitchforks). Needless to say, many of the most popular and successful musicals of all time have also dealt with demonic presences - even if in the case of Broadway's two biggest hits, they are misunderstood monsters. Indeed, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA remains the longest-running show in Broadway history, approaching its 20th year on the Great White Way, while Oz-themed witch-centric musical mega-hit WICKED remains one of the hottest tickets in town. With this week's news of Hollywood heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal starring in an upcoming Encores! special limited-run production of cult hit and famous Off-Broadway mainstay LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - not to mention the big news of a brand new small screen version of the ultimate cult movie musical, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, being revived for a new generation - it seems more than merely appropriate to turn our attention to the scariest, bloodiest and best horror-themed musicals to date.
