BWW Review: Seize the Stage! Rousing NEWSIES Leaps Over to OC's Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - May 24, 2016

Now after more than a year, NEWSIES' North American First National Tour is nearing its conclusion, finally stopping at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through May 29 (the musical will motor down to San Diego the following week). After seeing the original Broadway production in NYC and then seeing its Los Angeles debut at the Pantages Theatre last year, experiencing this exuberant, high-energy, smile-inducing crowd-pleaser again here in my own home turf felt like a special gift. NEWSIES is a fun, uplifting night at the theater... and continues to be in subsequent, multiple viewings. With its winning combination of incredibly acrobatic dancing, family-friendly comedy, engaging story, awesome singing, and dazzling showmanship, there is a lot to love with this show---whether you're 5 or 95. Heck, it certainly made a #Fansie out of me. (more...)

BWW Review: GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES - A Must-See, Ideal Convergence of Creative Talent
by Gil Kaan - May 23, 2016

Rajiv Joseph's very tricky to pull off GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES lands at the Hudson Backstage as a stunning success! Considering the main conceit of GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES requires two actors playing a 30-year age range from 8 to 38; in less capable hands, this seventy-minute one-act would have been so ripe for missteps.   (more...)

This rarely-performed work is full of symbolism, following a journey of mourning to hope of Paradise. At the invitation of James Levine, Mr. Conlon made his May Festival debut in 1978 conducting Stabat Mater (the following year he began his storied tenure as Music Director). BWW Review: Opulent AMADEUS Revival Fancies Up South Coast Rep Stage
by Michael L. Quintos - May 23, 2016

To close out its current season, Orange County's Tony-winning regional theater South Coast Repertory has chosen to mount an opulent, high-caliber revival of Peter Shaffer's 1979 play AMADEUS, which continues performances in Costa Mesa through June 5, 2016. The recipient of the 1981 Tony Award for Best Play, AMADEUS most notably became the basis for Milos Forman's Academy Award-winning (and, yes, arguably, much more readily known) 1984 film of the same name. For SCR's season-ender---engagingly directed by Kent Nicholson---the rather lengthy play is presented with much of the visual grandness one expects from an antiquated period piece, particularly from this particular theater company. And as an added bonus, the play is performed by a cast of incredible, seasoned actors that winningly transports its audience to a time and place centuries ago. So is it worth revisiting the tug-of-war between Salieri and Mozart? If it is South Coast Rep's visually-stunning production, then the answer is an enthusiastic 'yes.' (more...)

STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 5/22/16- Laurence Olivier
by Stage Tube - May 22, 2016

Happy Birthday, Laurence Olivier! Born in 1907, Olivier remains one of the most revered actors of the 20th century. He was the first artistic director of the National Theatre of Great Britain and its main stage is named in his honour. Olivier's career as a stage and film actor spanned more than six decades and included a wide variety of roles, from the title role in Shakespeare's Othello and Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night to the sadistic Nazi dentist Christian Szell in Marathon Man and the kindly but determined Nazi-hunter in The Boys from Brazil. Olivier played more than 120 stage roles: Richard III, Macbeth, Romeo, Hamlet, Othello, Uncle Vanya, and Archie Rice in The Entertainer. He appeared in nearly sixty films, including William Wyler's Wuthering Heights, Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus, Otto Preminger's Bunny Lake Is Missing, Richard Attenborough's Oh! What a Lovely War, and A Bridge Too Far, Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Sleuth, John Schlesinger's Marathon Man, Daniel Petrie's The Betsy, Desmond Davis' Clash of the Titans, and his own Henry V, Hamlet, and Richard III. (more...)

BWW Review: Raymond Marc Dumont Directs a Difficult, Disturbing, and Brilliant THE WILD PARTY
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - May 21, 2016

An air of curiosity and expectation was in the air at the opening of Andrew Lippa's THE WILD PARTY at South Portland's Portland Players. The 1997 musical with book, music and lyrics by Lippa is not a familiar piece for many musical theatre audiences. What they experienced in a little over two hours, created in the searing vision of director/choreographer Raymond Marc Dumont, was a theatre piece that is difficult, disturbing, and absolutely brilliant! Bay Area Musicals! to Wrap Inaugural Season with LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, 7/9-31
by BWW News Desk - May 20, 2016

Bay Area Musicals!, the newest non-profit theatrical organization to join the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area arts community, closes out its inaugural season with the multiple Tony Award-winning musical comedy, La Cage aux Folles. This thrilling and warmhearted farce centers around Georges and his lover Albin, who stars as Zaza at their St. Tropez drag nightclub 'La Cage aux Folles.' Problems arise when Georges' twenty-five year old son, Jean-Michel - a result from a brief encounter years back - announces that he is engaged to Anne Dindon, the daughter of a well-known homophobic politician, Edouard Dindon. Anne's parents want to come and meet Jean-Michel's mother and father. Little do they know that Albin, a man, has essentially been Jean-Michel's mother figure his whole life. This scenario propels audiences into side-splitting laughter, as well as teary-eyed moments of tenderness. La Cage Aux Folles is widely regarded as Jerry Herman's best score and features such classic songs as 'The Best of Times is Now,' 'Song In the Sand,' 'La Cage Aux Folles,' and 'I Am What I Am.' Playwright Domnica Radulescu Set for EXILE IS MY HOME Talkback at Theater For The New City, 5/21
by BWW News Desk - May 20, 2016

?Theater For The New City is pleased to announce a special talkback with internationally renowned author Domnica Radulescu and director Andreas Robertz, following the Saturday, May 21, 8:00 pm  performance of Exile Is My Home.  Told as a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic fairy tale,  Exile Is My Home is the haunting story of Mina and Lina, a refugee couple from the Balkans traveling through the galaxy in search of a planet to call home.  The play combines absurdist comedy, irony and suspense to raise consciousness about the current international refugee crisis and the complexity of issues related to it.  The story emerged partly from Radulescu's own experience as a political refugee from the former communist dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu and other accounts of displacement.  As millions of people are uprooted from their homes and swept across tumultuous seas and often unwelcome lands, Exile Is My Home highlights the importance of immigrant theater in bringing awareness about many of the challenges facing our world today.   (more...)
