Soprano Anna Netrebko was AWOL. Tenor Marcello Giordani wasn't there. Mezzo Isabel Leonard didn't make it either. At least tenor Richard Tucker (1913-1975) had the best excuse for not being at Avery Fisher Hall on Sunday evening. But, as they say “the show must go on”--and the annual gala of The Richard Tucker Foundation certainly did, despite all the cancellations. Celebrating the famed singer, as well as showcasing the newly anointed winner of its top award, tenor Michael Fabiano, the evening was filled with many pleasures. (more...)

On the heels of winning two Joseph Jefferson "Jeff" Awards (Best Original Music in a Play and Best Sound Design) in Chicago, and a critically acclaimed successful run of The Old Man and The Old Moon at the New Victory Theater in NYC, PigPen Theatre Co. will continue their 2014 season by taking the celebrated signature play to Boston in partnership with ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage at the Emerson College/Paramount Center (November 19-23). The limited tour, which originated at Williamstown Theatre Festival in August, and ran at the New Victory Theater from September 26 - October 13, 2014, will be the last chance to see The Old Man and The Old Moon performed by the original company. The Pulitzer Prize winning play DISGRACED by Ayad Akhtar will have its Broadway premiere this fall starring Hari Dhillon (star of the acclaimed London's Bush Theatre production), Gretchen Mol ('Boardwalk Empire'), Karen Pittman (Domesticated) and Josh Radnor ('How I Met Your Mother'). In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, DISGRACED has received Obie and Joseph Jefferson Awards. Kimberly Senior, who helmed the two previous US productions, will direct. This Can't Be Love: The Songs of Rodgers and Hart celebrates one of the most prolific and legendary songwriting duos of all time. Travis Moser takes the audience on a journey through the Rodgers and Hart songbook, while offering backstage and personal stories about the songs and the shows from which they came. Conductor James Conlon leads a rare revival of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Metropolitan Opera in six performances beginning Monday, November 10, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. The cast for Graham Vick's production includes soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek in the title role as Katerina Ismailova, tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Sergei, tenor Raymond Very as Zinovy Ismailov, and baritone Anatoli Kotscherga as Boris Ismailov.
