BWW Review: PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT at National Hispanic Cultural Center Journal Theater
by Devon Hoffman - Jul 6, 2016

It takes guts to do a show like Priscilla Queen of the Desert, a drag-queen pop musical based on a popular Oscar winning movie-in a venue like the National Hispanic Cultural Center's grand and elegant Journal Theater.  To do it right, the show needs to be big.  Big glitz, big musical numbers, big choreography, big audience.  Last Saturday, Albuquerque's Drag-queen performance group 'the Dolls' went as big as they could.  But because of the natural limitations that come with community theater, the show could not be enormous.  And because there wasn't enough character development to distract from these limitations, the empty spaces between each vamping glitzy drag queen began to detract.  (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Jul 31, 2016

The song-and-dance spectacular features the music of George and Ira Gershwin in a sparkling, spirited, high-stepping musical comedy. To a songbook of the greatest American standards ever sung, a cast of bootleggers, chorus girls, playboys, and politicians creates hilarity in a glorious Long Island mansion in the rip-roaring 1920s. With "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," "I've Got a Crush on You" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." (more...)

BWW Review: OC's Segerstrom Center Welcomes Delightful New THE SOUND OF MUSIC Tour
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 27, 2016

A surprisingly well-done, beautifully-paced production that feels like a truly fresh revival of something many of us have forever seared in our brains, this brand new, Jack O'Brien-helmed national tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC---now on stage at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through July 31---is a resplendent enterprise that is equal parts heartwarming nostalgia and entertaining, feel-good theater. Say what you will about how hokey and old-fashioned this show may be now... but I, for one, truly adored it. Besides its lovely visuals, this new revival has made a wonderful discovery in Kerstin Anderson, who plays a spunky, utterly charming version of everyone's favorite nun-turned-nanny Maria. (more...)
