One new component of the festival we're trying out this year is to offer writing workshops taught by Double (XX) Fest participants. Toward that end, we've got two for you:

Workshops:
Amy Morley - Week One (Saturday, April 9th 2-5pm in the UpStage)
Dialogue: A Playwright's Obsession, an Audience's Delight
Whether you are a novice writer or a highly experienced playwright, if you crave telling stories on stage, come to this 3-hour workshop that focuses on generating dialogue for the 10-minute play form. We create characters and shape relationships out of dialogue, and dialogue is all around us to be cut out of our own life story and pasted into our play! For this we must perk up our ears and keep a recording device handy. But also, by working within parameters of writing prompts we can unleash our creativity to generate dialogue intentionally. You'll leave this workshop with a tool kit you can use to capture and generate dialogue, ad infinitum! We'll also briefly review the elements of storytelling that can create intrigue on stage and give practical info about submitting your work for production. Bring some item that inspires you to write a play: a photograph, piece of clothing, song, family story, or snippet of dialogue from real life.

Class Length: 3 hours

Bio: Amy Morley began playwriting in 2009 through the Stonington Opera House in Maine, studying with John Cariani (actor and playwright of Almost, Maine and Last Gas). Annabel Eden, Amy's first play, was performed at the Opera House in 2010. Amy has also performed in several play readings at the Opera House, writes and performs skits with Aunt Mae's Cabaret, a political/social satire comedy troupe, and has studied memoir writing with Meredith Hall at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Amy graduated from Hampshire College, concentrating in art and Buddhist philosophy. She works at the Institute for Humane Education in Maine.

Rebecca Goldberg - Week 3 (Saturday, April 16 from 2-5pm in the UpStage)
Write a Play, Right Now
If you've ever thought about trying your hand at playwriting, or if you're an experienced playwright stuck by your own expectation of perfection, this is the workshop for you. We'll take improv games and writing prompts and use them to create characters, experiment with style, and explore conflict--and each participant will write a first draft of their own short play from scratch. You don't need experience, genius, or even an idea--just come with laptop or pen and paper, dress for movement, and be ready to play.

Class length: 3 hours.

Bio Rebecca Goldberg is a theatre artist who has been performing, writing, and directing in Seattle for more than 12 years. Recent directing credits include Kiss, Damn It! at the Odd Duck and In Session at Freehold's Studio series. Her work as a playwright has been seen at Theatre Babylon, Live Girls, and Key City Public Theatre. She is also a facilitator and Steering Committee member of The Field - Seattle, which helps artists of all disciplines develop their work through refelective feedback. Her next big project will be producing and performing in her solo show Me vs My Subconscious.

So, if you're an actor who's always wanted to try your hand at playwriting, or a seasoned playwright up for trying something new, or you're interested for other reasons entirely, we're offering these two workshops just for you! Cost for each workshop is a $10 suggested donation, payable at the door. Class size is limited to 12, so please register early!
