On the eve of her 27th birthday, Cathy is having a crisis. She feels that by the age of 27 she should definitely feel older and more mature than she does. She decides to vent via YouTube videos.

She talks about how she found a box of old vinyl LPs belonging to her late mother. Amoungst the 80s classics she finds Kate Bush's "The Kick Inside" and when she starts to play it memories of her mother come flooding back.

The initial tone is lighthearted and Cathy's spirited dance moves to Wuthering Heights go down a treat. The tone becomes more serious when we learn that Cathy's mother committed suicide. She talks about the time leading up to her death and her mothers unhappiness- all set to the music of Kate Bush.

This is a nod to the need to share our every thought and feeling via social media. Cathy shares her innermost thoughts to a youtube audience and soon racks up over half a million hits.

I really enjoyed Cutting Off Kate Bush. It was a more heartfelt story than I was expecting and the music is so theatrical it works really well in this piece. I found it quite emotional in places and thought it was an excellent piece of new writing. While it is billed as a comedy I found the first half of it to fit the description but later on becomes something a little more genuine and the piece is all the better for it.

Cutting Off Kate Bush runs at the Gilded Balloon until August 25th.
