The Sound of Music is based on the true story of Baroness Maria Von Trapp. For anyone unfamiliar with the story, Maria was living in an Abbey when it was suggested to her that she spend some time on the outside to decide if she truly was ready to commit to life in the convent. She was sent to work as a governness for a naval captain and his seven children and she falls in love with the captain.

The stage production is a little different to the film version. While certain elements have been understandably scaled down from the lavish movie, the songs are in a different order and there are some that weren't committed to celluloid at all. It would seem that no expense has been spared when it comes to sets and costumes as the show is also visually stunning.

Fresh from her Broadway debut, Danielle Hope was the perfect Maria. Her vocals were flawless and her performance was just spot on. Steven Houghton was a very capable Captain Von Trapp, but I felt he lacked the spark which I have seen other actors possess in other productions. As always, it is the Von Trapp children that steal the limelight and the young actors really did shine with their performance.

The audience was made up of all ages and I think The Sound of Music is one of those shows that really does appeal to everyone. Although it seems to be on an almost constant UK tour, it has avoided becoming tired. This is an excellent production of The Sound of Music which really highlights what a timeless musical it is.

The Sound of Music is on tour across the UK.
