The incredibly charismatic Brian Conley stars as Phineas T Barnum in this story of "America's Greatest Showman". While Barnum relied on deception to kick start his career, his wife Chairy tries to guide him towards more practical endeavours. Despite many of Barnum's ventures being outright cons, you can't help but like him.

The storyline lacks excitement but that can be forgiven with all the glitz that accompanies it. The highlight for me was when Barnum initally takes over a new museum. The choreography and set pieces are really taken to another level during these scenes.

While Conley is not the strongest singer he more than makes up for it with his onstage presence and ability to charm an audience. The music is pleasant but not overly memorable; however, the enthusiasm and talent of the cast supercedes that too.

The selling point of Barnum really is the spectacle. The sets and costumes are stunning and the circus performances are something else altogether. During one tightrope sequence you heard the audience take several sharp intakes of breath. Conley is also skilled with ad libs when things don't quite go according to plan!

While Barnum does lack in certain areas, it really is a visually spectacular show and you are guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face!

Barnum is on tour around the UK.
