The year is 1898, the place Nicodemus Kansas where four women, who fled the south seeking a new life under the Homestead Act, find solace and hard work in owning their own land. Sophie Washington, an assertive, civic- minded woman, is determined to protect her land and that of the community of colored farmers. She puts to rest the requirement that western archetypes be white and male. Fannie Mae Dove is a gentle woman trying to civilize the frontier with fine china and flowers. Her sister, Minnie Dove Charles has a mulatto husband whose abusive nature and hatred of his black roots introduces danger to the household and tests the sisterhood of women in the home. The feisty Miss Leah, the elder of the group, shares memories of slavery and is the watchful eye of wisdom.
