The Princess Grace Foundation-USA has announced that it is establishing a new award to support emerging theater professionals in any discipline for his/her "Unique Contribution to Theater."  This award is being funded by a $1,000,000 charitable gift from the John Gore Organization with a goal of identifying and supporting extraordinary young talent in the theater field.  The award will be presented annually, beginning in 2019.

More artists and activities have been added to the REACH Opening Festival, the free 16-day celebration highlighting the many and varied ways that the Kennedy Center's newly expanded campus will connect, inspire, and engage audiences and artists. The NY Dance and Performance Awards, The Bessies, New York City's premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field, celebrates a landmark 35th anniversary this year. Today, the nominees for the 2019 Bessie Awards, along with the recipients of the 2019 Juried Bessie Award and 2019 Outstanding Breakout Choreographer Award, were announced and celebrated at the Bessies press conference. This fall, artists and audiences from the Washington, D.C. area, the U.S., and around the globe come together at the nation's cultural capital to dance, sing, create, collaborate, listen, learn, talk, share, and celebrate the opening of the REACH, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts's unprecedented new expansion. At a preview event today, May 29, which marks both President Kennedy's 102nd birthday and 100 days until the historic opening, the Kennedy Center unveiled preliminary details of the free 16-day REACH Opening Festival on September 7-22.

The School Of American Ballet is hosting their Alumni Cocktail Reception at Lincoln Center on Friday, May 31th. This event is for SAB alums who will toast the 2019 Annual Workshop Performances.

The Chita Rivera Awards, taking place at The NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts this Sunday, May 19, announces presenters for the evening. Presenters include Chita Rivera, Andy Blankenbuehler, Camille A. Brown, Ariana DeBose, Luann de Lesseps, Micaela Diamond, Damon J. Gillespie, Savion Glover, Marilu Henner, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Tiler Peck, Lee Roy Reams, Michael Riedel, Ethan Slater, Mary Testa and Richard Thomas.

Nominations for the 2019 Chita Rivera Awards were announced today. In keeping with the mission of the Chita Rivera Awards, nominators considered shows and films that opened during the 2018-2019 theater season.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) marked the anniversary of the center's groundbreaking with the 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee Gala on Sunday, May 5 hosted by Neil Patrick Harris with performances by Joshua Bell; Harry Connick, Jr.; Larisa Martinez; Erin Morley; Jessie Mueller; conductor Luke Frazier with Juilliard students; Sugartone Brass Band; Young People's Chorus of New York City and award presentations by Chelsea Clinton, Misty Copeland, Justin Peck, Tiler Peck, and Damian Woetzel.

5th Avenue Theatre's production of Marie, Dancing Still officially opened last night, April 5. The show is written by Tony Award-winning authors Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Once On This Island), and is directed by five-time Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman (The Producers, Contact). It stars New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck.

Dear Readers, in my capacity as a reviewer and as a musical theater geek at large, I've been privileged to witness more than a few out of town tryouts, those plucky wanna-be Broadway shows taking a shot in another city. Both here at home and abroad, I occasionally get a glimpse at greatness in the making, and yes, some at the 5th Avenue Theatre. I remember marveling at the glory of 'Memphis' and not being able to contain my enthusiasm or stay in my seat during the curtain call of 'Hairspray'. But not all are winners. (I'm looking at you, 'Princesses'.) So, each and every time the 5th Avenue announces their next great new musical, I'm a little trepidatious even when the show is from two of my favorite composers, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, not to mention directed and choregraphed by the indomitable Susan Stroman. So along came 'Little Dancer' which many whom I mentioned it to thought was an Elton John jukebox musical. (Wrong lyric, guys. That's 'Tiny Dancer'.) Then the show was changed to 'Marie', possibly owing to such confusion and finally to 'Marie, Dancing Still'. But whether they want to call it 'Little Dancer', or 'Marie, Dancing Still' or 'How Degas Got His Groove Back', what they have is a bona fide, must see, must cry throughout, accept no substitutes, hit in the making and a definite addition to my list of shows I was honored to catch early on.
