At 60-something-years-old, one can accurately describe Tovah Feldshuh as what plucky is when it grows up. Feldshuh's mother Lily died at 103 having lived, one gathers, like the character her daughter played in Pippin: 'Oh, it's time to start livin'/Time to take a little from this world we're given/Time to take time, cause spring will turn to fall/In just no time at all . . .' Later in her 54 Below show Aging Is Optional (which Feldshuh presents again tonight at 7 pm), we all sing the chorus, though no one with more gusto than the artist who delivers its lyric like a battle cry. The venue, once again, was the glorious Smith Center, a half-billion dollar performing arts center that has become a vital force in the Las Vegas musical and theatrical community. Actress/lawyer Allison Brush made her very well-received cabaret debut at Upstairs at Vitello's Sunday September 14 with her show entitled For This You Went to Law School? Once an actress/singer, Brush, discouraged by rejection like many, left the profession and studied law, passing the bar exam on her first try. Now after many successful years as a lawyer, in which she claims she was miserable, she is returning to show biz, something she has sorely missed. In fact, participating in weekly sessions of Open Mic at the Gardenia and studying with songstress/master teacher Karen Morrow - law by day and singing at night - singing became her therapy. MAUDE MAGGART - the acclaimed vocalist hailed as 'singular and arresting' by the New York Times, 'wonderful' by Business Week and 'ingenious' by the Village Voice - will make her debut at the Cafe Carlyle with a special engagement from February 25 to March 1. Her new show 'The Door Opened' will feature numbers by golden-age songwriters Irving Berlin ('I Used To Be Color Blind'), Harry Warren ('Serenade In Blue') and Dorothy Fields ('Blue Again'), in addition to rarely-heard songbook gems including 'Why Am I So Romantic?' (introduced in the legendary Marx Brothers film Animal Crackers) and 'I May Be Wrong, But I Think You're Wonderful' (performed by Maude's grandmother). The evening will feature Music Director John Boswell on piano. She will preview the Carlyle run with two performances at the Gardenia in Los Angeles on February 14 and 15. (more...)
