Broadway veteran Kirby Ward will direct and star in Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston's Crazy for You, George and Ira Gershwin's musical comedy about a 1930's playboy who just wants to dance.  Crazy for You is the final production in the company's 48th consecutive summer season and will run for 8 performances from August 4-14, 2016 at the Robinson Theatre (617 Lexington St. Waltham, MA, 02452).  In addition to directing, Ward will reprise his spectacular Olivier Award-nominated role as "Bobby Child", the part he originated for the 1993 London premiere.  This high energy production will also star Broadway veteran Beverly Ward (Epic Proportions, Billy Elliot ) as "Polly Baker."  The family-friendly show features flashy tap dance numbers and such memorable songs as 'Someone to Watch Over Me,' 'Embraceable You' and 'I Got Rhythm." Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston will bring the bright lights of 1920's New York City to the stage with the Tony Award-winning musical comedy Thoroughly Modern Mille from July 7-17, 2016.  Millie will run for eight performances at the Robinson Theatre (617 Lexington St. Waltham, MA, 02452).  Directed by Broadway veteran Cynthia Thole (Me and My Girl), Millie will star Gabrielle Carrubba (American Idol Season 11, Spring Awakening) as Millie Dillmount, a small-town girl who arrives in New York City to lead a thoroughly modern life. Millie will also feature Maryann Zschau (Nunsense National Tour) reprising her IRNE Award-winning role as Mrs. Meers (Reagle Music Theater 2006) and IRNE nominee Mark Linehan (Shrek The Musical, South Pacific) as Trevor Graydon.  This lavish musical is filled with fabulous flappers, eccentric New Yorkers and soaring musical numbers including "Forget About the Boy" and "Only In New York."   (more...)

Today in 1992, Crazy for You opened at the Shubert Theatre, where it ran for 1622 performances. Crazy for You is a musical with a book by Ken Ludwig, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and music by George Gershwin. Billed as 'The New Gershwin Musical Comedy', it is largely based on the songwriting team's 1930 musical, Girl Crazy, but interpolates songs from several other productions as well. Crazy for You won the 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production was directed by Mike Ockrent and choreographed by Susan Stroman.The cast included Jodi Benson as Polly, Harry Groener as Bobby Child, Bruce Adler as Bela Zangler, John Hillner as Lank Hawkins, Michele Pawk as Irene Roth, Jane Connell as Mother, and Beth Leavel as Tess. Long Island certainly has some brilliant holiday productions this season. Currently running through December 29th, Oakdale's Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center (CMPAC) has mounted a delightful showing of the musical version of A Christmas Carol; the one Madison Square Garden has produced. With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and book by Ms. Ahrens with Mike Ockrent, the wonderful cast surely didn't disappoint. (more...)

Director Cassey Kivnick has been chosen as the 2015-2016 Mike Ockrent Fellow on Jerry Mitchell's Gotta Dance. Ms. Kivnick's fellowship will last the entire length of the production process, with pre-production and rehearsals on Gotta Dance beginning in November 2015 and continuing on until the spring 2016 premiere on Broadway.  Ms. Kivnick will receive a $5000 award. Quest Theatre Ensemble will bring its visual artistry and immersive theatricality to the Alan Menken-Lynn Ahrens musical version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. This version with music by Menken, the multiple Oscar winning composer of Disney musicals Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Newsies; and lyrics by the Tony award-winning lyricist of Ragtime, Seussical and Once on this Island, was a hit for ten consecutive seasons at New York's Madison Square Garden and was later filmed by television in a production starring Kelsey Grammer as Scrooge. Quest's production will be directed by Quest Ensemble Director Andrew Park. A Christmas Carol will run from November 20 - December 20, 2015. (more...)

The National New Play Network, the country's alliance of nonprofit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays, announced its 2015-16 grant recipients, including the Smith Prize for Political Theatre, the 2015 Annual Commission, two Playwright Residencies, five Producer Residencies, and two Collaboration Fund awards that will support partnership between eight of its members on two productions. In all, NNPN committed over $125,000 to fourteen Core Member Theaters and nine Affiliated Artists. (more...)
