CAUGHT and More Set for Sundance Institute's 2014 Theatre Lab, Now thru 7/27

Sundance Institute today announced the nine projects selected to participate in its 2014 Theatre Lab, July 7-27 at the Sundance Resort in Utah. The Lab is the centerpiece of the Institute's year-round work with the theatre community and is one of 10 residential labs the Institute will host for artists this summer, collectively representing the most promising new independent theatre and film projects. Hangar Theatre Announces 2014 Wedge Series Lineup; Runs 6/19-7/25

The Hangar Theatre is pleased to announce the shows for its upcoming Wedge Series. These four shows will be under the direction of the Drama League Directing Fellows, and will feature members of the Hangar Theatre Lab Company. Each year the Hangar offers free admission to Hangar patrons and all community members to its Wedge Series of cutting edge performances. These shows take place under the Hangar Tent, which is transformed into a unique performance venue for each Wedge show. Performances begin 15 minutes after the scheduled Mainstage performances on June 19 and 20, and July 3, 4, 17, 18, 24, and 25. Wedge performances are open to all ages; however they may contain mature language and situations that may not be suitable for all children. (more...)

PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST - an evening with the Tony Award-winning actress Linda Lavin and her husband Steve Bakunas, a painter, actor and jazz drummer - was just presented by the Vineyard Theatre (108 E. 15 St.) last night, June 16 at 7 pm to benefit the company's productions, artistic development initiatives and arts education programs, it has been announced by Douglas Aibel, The Vineyard's artistic director, and Sarah Stern, co-artistic director. PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST featured Ms. Lavin and Mr. Bakunas in a 90-minute intimate evening during which Ms. Lavin answers questions about her life and career, posed by her husband while he paints her portrait on stage. An evening of warmth, romance, humor and nostalgia, the couple has previously performed the program at venues around the country. (more...)

The Yale Institute for Music Theatre announces the creative teams and casting for the two original book musicals, Afterland, music and lyrics by Benjamin Velez and book and lyrics by Kathryn Hathaway, and Clouds are Pillows for the Moon, music by Tidtaya Sinutoke and book and lyrics by Ty Defoe, which will be developed in an intensive lab setting in New Haven, June 3-15. The Institute culminates with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, on June 14 and 15. (more...)

Producers of the Tony Award winning musical Rodgers + Hammerstein's CINDERELLA, Robyn Goodman, Jill Furman and Stephen Kocis, have announced that Paige Faure, now appearing in Bullets Over Broadway, will be Broadway's new CINDERELLA starting June 13. Faure will also lead the national tour of the hit, Tony Award-winning musical when it begins performances October 10 in Providence, RI. Ms. Faure assumes the role following the 4-month limited engagement of Carly Rae Jepsen, which concludes June 8. (more...)

Now in its second year on Broadway, CINDERELLA continues to play to large and enthusiastic audiences at the Broadway Theatre (1681 Broadway). The show currently stars Grammy-nominated recording artist Carly Rae Jepsen as Cinderella, Joe Carroll as Prince Topher, Fran Drescher as Madame, Victoria Clark as the Fairy Godmother, Ann Harada as Charlotte, Stephanie Gibson as stepsister Gabrielle, Peter Barlet as Sebastian, Todd Buonopane as the rebel Jean-Michel and Phumzile Sojola as Lord Pinkleton. Over 400 guests including current and past New York City high school students, and the performing arts professional mentors who have participated in TDF's Open Doors, the theatre arts mentoring program that TDF founded in 1998 with playwright Wendy Wasserstein, will attend this year's graduation at 5:30pm on Monday, June 2 at The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College (524 West 59th Street, NYC). In 2012, TDF's Open Doors was the first arts education program to receive a special Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre. This year, Open Doors had 27 mentors working with 24 groups of students from New York City high schools. (more...)

Fran Drescher Extends Run in CINDERELLA Through 6/29

The Emmy and Golden Globe nominated star Fran Drescher ('The Nanny') will extend her engagement an additional three weeks until June 29 in Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA on Broadway, it has been announced by the Tony Award-winning musical's producers Robyn Goodman, Jill Furman and Stephen Kocis. Ms. Drescher - making her Broadway debut this season as Cinderella's wicked stepmother - joined the production in February and, while an extension through June 8 was previously announced, it has been determined anew that Ms. Drescher will remain with the CINDERELLA company through June 29.
