BWW Review: Lesli Margherita is All Brass and Belting in One-Woman Show 'Broad' at Birdland, Paying Tribute to the Women Who Never Backed DownBWW Review: Lesli Margherita is All Brass and Belting in One-Woman Show 'Broad' at Birdland, Paying Tribute to the Women Who Never Backed Down
by Casey Mink - Jul 28, 2016

'Broad: A term originated in the 1930s meaning woman. Less respectable than 'lady,' but much more respectable than 'bitch.' Broad: An independent, aggressive, assertive woman, usually in show business. Broads sing loud, are sarcastic, and are in your face. Broads are generally moderately attractive or better, never seen without their best dresses and perfect makeup, and they know how to compete and win in a man's world.' This is how Lesli Margherita began her one-woman show at Birdland Jazz on July 25, the second of a two-performance return engagement at the club. Reading from a music stand so as not to mince words, Margherita recited the dictionary definition of her show's eponymous moniker, because if nothing else, through Broad, Margherita wanted to make sure her audience understood one thing: Broads like her will never be deterred. BWW Review: Escape to THE LITTLE MERMAIDBWW Review: Escape to THE LITTLE MERMAID
by Marietta Lunceford - Jul 9, 2016

After a traumatic few weeks for our nation and around the world, it was a delight to escape into the world of make believe watching Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID, presented by Red Mountain Theatre Company. I was thrilled to be able to forget the horrors of the real world for a couple of hours and see a show where good triumphs over evil, where families from different worlds can accept their differences, put them aside and focus on love, and where everyone lives happily ever after. THE LITTLE MERMAID runs through July 31. For more information and tickets go to www.redmountaintheatre.org or call 205-324-2424. (more...)

Museum of Arts and Design to Open EYE FOR DESIGN Exhibition, 6/7Museum of Arts and Design to Open EYE FOR DESIGN Exhibition, 6/7
by BWW News Desk - May 26, 2016

Drawn from its own archive and that of the American Craft Council, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents Eye for Design, an exhibition that explores the unique graphic identity created by the Museum (then the Museum of Contemporary Crafts) in the 1960s and 1970s through its imaginatively designed exhibition catalogues and related ephemera. As the field of graphic design became increasingly corporate driven, the designers featured in this exhibition-including Emil Antonucci, John J. Reiss, Sam Richardson, and Linda Hinrichs-dared to break graphic conventions and captured the spirit of the Museum with hand-drawn illustrations, playful use of typography, vibrant color, fresh design, and inventive adaption of the catalogue form. by Michael Dale - Apr 21, 2016

Writers seeking fame and recognition are generally advised to steer clear of the task of writing books for Broadway musicals. Regarded by theatre insiders to be perhaps the most vital, yet most underappreciated element of a successful musical, the book oftentimes receives the least credit when a musical's a hit, but is the first thing blamed if it's a flop. by Victoria Ordin - Mar 22, 2016

Having recently added a 2016 Bistro Award for “Commanding Cabaret Artistry” to her list of accolades (including a Tony nomination and Theater World Award for her 1989 Broadway debut in Starmites), Sharon McNight belted and growled her way through Songs to Offend Almost Everyone at the second of her two shows at the Duplex (March 10).
