Students from 10 NYC public schools, whose plays will be published by renowned publisher Samuel French, will showcase their original plays and perform them at the Pearl Theatre as part of the LeAp OnStage program. LeAp OnStage, created by Learning through an Expanded Arts Program (LeAp), immerses 500 underserved and culturally isolated public school students in an interactive and comprehensive theater program. Since 2006, LeAp OnStage has transformed the lives of over 4,000 inner-city middle school and high school students, by inspiring youth to actively engage with the arts and opening up college and career opportunities in theater. Broadway legend Joel Grey (CABARET, WICKED) and Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein (FINDING NEVERLAND) were honored last night at this year's Fred and Adele Astaire Awards. The gala evening CELEBRATED the 2015 season's outstanding dance and choreography on Broadway and film. Paper Mill Playhouse just opened the world-premiere musical Ever After, directed and choreographed by three-time Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes, Nice Work If You Can Get It), featuring a book and lyrics by Marcy Heisler and music by Zina Goldrich. With several recent Paper Mill productions having gone on to enjoy runs on Broadway, the question on everyone's mind is whether this new musical has a future on the Great White Way. In a recent article for the Bergen Record, lyricist Heisler explained: 'Broadway is not the goal, a great show is the goal.' The show's composer Goldrich continued: 'We don't get to decide whether it's commercial, We only get to decide whether it sounds good to us. You try to write something you would like to see, and you hope others will, too.' (more...)
