Dion Millington to Star as 'Dorothy' in Harlem Rep's THE WIZ, Opening 10/18

The Harlem Repertory Theatre's AUDELCO winning multi-media production of the THE WIZ will feature AUDELCO Award-winning singer/actress Dion Millington as Dorothy. THE WIZ will be directed and choreographed by Keith Lee Grant whose 2009 production of THE WIZ won the AUDELCO awards for Best Director and Choreographer of a musical. Critically acclaimed animator Edward Corcino and UNIMA Award-winning designer Daniel Fergus Tamulonis have created entertaining and provocative video animations, costumes and puppets for the HRT's new chamber version of THE WIZ. For Tonight, by creators Shenelle Williams, Spencer Williams and Whitney Rhodes, has extended its run at The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF). This will be the first time in the history of the festival that a reading will add an additional performance to its run. They will be performing a concert version of this new original musical on Friday, July 18, 2014 at 9pm at Ford Foundation Studio Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036). For Tonight, a new original musical, by creators Shenelle Williams, Spencer Williams and Whitney Rhodes is headed to New York City to participate in The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) as a developmental reading. For Tonight's story is inspired by the life of the writer's great-great-great-grandfather in the 1830's in Northern Wales/Liverpool. With its indie-rock inspired score and a completely original book, this story focuses on the universal themes of love, family and acceptance. The show will have three performances at The Studio Theatre at Theatre Row in July 2014. (more...)

Elizabeth A. Sackler Elected First Woman Board Chair of Brooklyn Museum

The Members of the Board of Trustees of the Brooklyn Museum have elected Elizabeth A. Sackler, Board member since 2000, as the Museum's Chair. Dr. Sackler, the first woman in the nearly 200-year history of the Museum to serve in that position, is the founder of the Museum's Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. She succeeds retiring chair John S. Tamagni, who has served as Chair since 2011 and will continue to serve as an active Board member. (more...)

THE LION KING North American Tour Opens Tomorrow in Washington, D.C.

The return engagement of Disney's THE LION KING opens this week in the Kennedy Center Opera House for a limited nine-week engagement through August 17. In Washington, D.C., THE LION KING plays Tuesdays through Sunday evenings at 7:30pm with 1:30pm matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. There will be 1:30pm matinees on Wednesday, July 2, Wednesday, July 30 and Wednesday, August 13. There will not be a performance on Friday, July 4. (more...)

The Children's Theater Foundation of America (CTFA) has announced that Barry Kornhauser of Millersville University, a nationally recognized playwright, director and educator has been named the recipient of its 2014 Medallion Award. The Award is regarded as the highest honor in the field of Theater for Young Audiences. This year's ceremony - where the award will be officially announced and presented -- will take place in the Imperial Ballroom of the Denver Hyatt at the annual American Alliance for Theatre and Education national conference in Denver, Colorado on Friday, August 1. Disney's THE LION KING continues to reign across North America with a sold-out engagement in Toronto, which concluded on Sunday, June 15 at The Princess of Wales Theatre. The triumphant seven-week return grossed over $11.75 million at the box office and entertained more than 100,000 patrons during 56 performances. The award-winning musical premiered in Toronto in April 2000 at the Princes of Wales Theatre, where it played 1,560 performances through January 2004 and returned in 2011 for an eight-week sold-out engagement.
