BWW Review: MTW Presents a Definitive GUYS AND DOLLS
by Don Grigware - Feb 20, 2018

Guys and Dolls/music & lyrics by Frank Loesser/book by Joe Swerling and Abe Burrows/based on stories by Damon Runyon/directed by Mark Martino/musical director: Benet Braun/choreographer: Daniel Smith/Musical Theatre West (MTW),Long Beach/through March 4 My first association with musical composer Frank Loesser was as an actor in the 70s in a revue of his music. I played Sky Masterson of Guys and Dolls and sang a duet of 'I've Never Been In Love Before'. I came to realize quite rapidly how lovely his music is and how well he manages to capture the moment of genuine emotion within a song. Upon seeing Guys and Dolls several times since, I have been awestruck as well by Abe Burrows' and Joe Swerling's ability to take Damon Runyon's New York Broadway characters from the 20s and 30s and blow them up into something overwhelmingly moving and appealing. The two worlds of sin and redemption have never been connect

BWW Review: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Is Alive and Puttin' On the Ritz at 3D Theatricals
by Don Grigware - Oct 9, 2017

Young Frankenstein/book by Mel Brooks & Thomas Meehan/music & lyrics by Mel Brooks/original direction recreated by David Lamoureux/original choreography recreated by Daniel Smith/musical director: Corey Hirsch/3-D Theatricals at Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center/through October 15/October 20-29 at Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts I revert to childhood when I see a Mel Brooks movie or show. The sillier the better: the sight gags, the double entendres, the more the merrier. The New Mel Brooks Musical, Young Frankenstein is a real rip-roaring hoot of a show from start to finish as produced by 3-D Theatricals with a great cast and zippy fast-paced direction and fine staging from David Lamoureux, recreating the original of Susan Stroman and Daniel Smith recreating her choreography.

Review: Laughs Abound at THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE at the Norris Theatre
by Shari Barrett - Sep 16, 2017

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is a hip musical comedy which follows six young people in the throes of puberty, who are overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, as they learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The musical, featuring emotionally revealing musical selections filled with side-splitting lyrics written by William Finn, chronicles the overachievers' angst of six precocious adolescents who turn out to be the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom the Bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

BWW Review: THE KING OF THE YEES Playwright Lauren Yee Shares Her Father's Story in an Innovative World Premiere Staging
by Shari Barrett - Jul 18, 2017

In her new latest play KING OF THE YEES, now enjoying its World Premiere at Center Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, Yee shares the tale of how her father Larry has been a driving force in the Yee Fung Toy (Yee Family Association), a seemingly obsolescent Chinese American men's club formed 150 years ago in the wake of the Gold Rush when workers from China were brought to San Francisco to assist in the building of the much-needed railroads crossing America. And while the story may be totally fictionalized, it seemed very real to me, especially since Yee wrote herself as well as her father into the play, having them introduced in an innovative, comical, and interactive way during the preamble to the production. For those of you lucky enough to be seated in the front row, be prepared to interact with the overly friendly and well-intentioned Larry Yee, portrayed with energy and glee by Francis Jue.
