BWW Reviews: ANNA NICOLE's 36DDs Gain AAA Status with New York City Opera at BAM's Next Wave Festival
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 19, 2013

With a story that is somehow poignant despite its scatological language, ANNA NICOLE's heroine is nicer than Berg's LULU, less lucky than TRAVIATA's Violetta and more cunning than MANON's Manon (though maybe not MANON LESCAUT's). Whatever she is, Anna Nicole Smith is definitely a full-fledged operatic heroine. As portrayed by American soprano Sarah Joy Miller in the local premiere of the Marc-Anthony Turnage-Richard Thomas work about the life and times of minor celebrity Smith, this is a wildly entertaining evening. The opera, which debuted two years ago in London, opened on September 17 at Brooklyn Academy of Music, compliments of New York City Opera and BAM's Next Wave Festival, directed by Richard Jones.

'The Bible and Bob Marley' is First Book Written on Marley as Biblical Interpreter
by Matt Tamanini - Sep 16, 2013

Author Dean MacNeil knows from experience that Bob Marley's music carries a life-affirming, transformative message. 'His music helped me and my family endure the loss of my sixteen-year old brother Scott, who was killed in a car crash,' said MacNeil. This experience led MacNeil on a quest to uncover the source of Marley's message, resulting in his new book, The Bible and Bob Marley: Half the Story Has Never Been Told. The product of over twenty years of research, it is the first book to explain how Marley interprets the Bible in his lyrics.

by Jill Siekman - Mar 25, 2013

Despite Tony Award wins for its soaring score and riveting script in 1999, the theatrical telling of the Leo Frank story is one rarely produced, requiring a large and talented cast and recounting a real American tragedy many would rather forget. That will change this April.

Director Robert Falls Talks and Tweet About MEASURE FOR MEASURE at Goodman Theatre, March-April 2013
by BWW News Desk - Mar 1, 2013

'Should a woman sleep with a man she finds repellent if by doing so she serves a greater good?' (New York Times) is among the questions of William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, at Goodman Theatre in a new production directed by Artistic Director Robert Falls. Falls sets his production of Shakespeare's dark comedy against the backdrop of New York City circa 1970s-an era in which economic challenges, urban flight and the sexual revolution transformed one of the greatest cities in the world into one of the most troubled.
