To kick off a season that explores gender warfare, victim shaming, racial bias and police corruption, The Seeing Place Theater announces its cast for Shakespeare's timeless drama, OTHELLO. Staged in modern dress with a deep focus on the language, this story is brought to life through the lens of one central dilemma:
How can your ego survive when "the other" stands in your way?
"We live in a world that pretends it is accepting of others, while silently or overtly belittling people we do not understand, " says TSP Artistic Director, Brandon Walker. "OTHELLO is not just a black play - our ensemble is exploring this story as it relates to all of us today, particularly in our current climate of strained Arab/American relations. OTHELLO's themes highlight a strong need for empathy with respect to all races, genders, economic classes and religious beliefs."
The play opens February 26, 2015 for a 3 week run in New York City at their new home at the Clarion Theatre. This production is co-directed by TSP's founding artistic team Brandon Walker and Erin Cronican. It boasts a strong ensemble including Esther Chen (Montano/1st Senator), Erin Cronican (Desdemona), John D'Arcangelo (Brabantio/Gratiano), Lex Daemon (Lodovico/2nd Senator), Ian Moses Eaton (Othello), Brisa Freitas (Bianca/Clown), Logan Keeler (Cassio), Daniel Michael Perez (Roderigo), Lila Smith (Emilia), Carla Torgrimson (Duke/Herald) and Brandon Walker (Iago.) Original Music for the production is provided by Donna Kendall Stearns, with Lighting Design by Duane Pagano. Assistant direction is provided by Mary Ruth Baggott, with understudies Alex Witherow and Mary Ruth Baggott.
The Seeing Place's 6th Season will also include BOY GETS GIRL by Rebecca Gilman running in rotating repertory with Pulitzer Prize nominee BOY'S LIFE by Howard Korder; and Dario Fo's ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST running in rotating repertory with Johnna Adams' searing two-person drama, GIDION'S KNOT.
