NJPAC Offers Free Sounds of the City Concerts Featuring Living Colour & Burnt Sugar, 7/10

(Newark, New Jersey-June 30, 2014)- New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presents the Horizon Foundation Sounds of the City free outdoor summer concert series, every Thursday from July 10th - August 28th at 5PM taking place at NJPAC's outdoor Theater Square. "The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey is proud to be the title sponsor of NJPAC's Sounds of the City free outdoor concert series for the second consecutive year," said Jonathan R. Pearson, Executive Director of The Foundation. "As a Newark-based company, we are proud to support NJPAC and the talented artists that will bring the community together to enjoy these wonderful events."

Kicking off the annual series on Thursday, July 10th is New York's Legendary Radio Host, Felix Hernandez, presenting"Rhythm Revue" - a combination of R&B, Disco, Classic Soul, Jazz. On Thursday, July 17th, Ten-time Grammy nominated international Reggae band, Third World, will perform their hits: "Now That We Found Love," "Try Jah Love," and so much more. Also performing at NJPAC's Theater Square is Red Baraat on July 24th performing with an eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk, and hip-hop.

Don't miss Eddie Palmieri Salsa Orchestra in a rare performance on Thursday, July 31st. Eddie Palmieri, known as one of the finest Latin jazz pianists of the past 50 years as well as a bandleader of both salsa and Latin jazz orchestras, skillfully fuses the rhythm of Puerto Rico with the melody and complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk and NEA Jazz Masters Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner."

The Horizon Foundation Sounds of the City summer series continues throughout the month of August, beginning with a performance on Thursday, August 7th by the Funky Meters, who have grooved their way around the globe for 40 years, including tours with such talents as The Rolling Stones, and have been a studio band for such diverse artists as Dr. John, Paul McCartney, Robert Palmer, and Patti Labelle. On Thursday, August 14th performing live, it is NJPAC's "Ambassadors of Jazz": Brick City Jazz Orchestra and Black Violin." Virtuoso violinists Kev Marcus and Wil B of Black Violin are dynamic, classically trained musicians on a mission to prove that classical music can be cool. Their electrifying style mines the synergy of classical, jazz, blues, R&B and hip-hop. Whether you lean toward Bach or Beyoncé, Black Violin's innovative style is sure to leave you mesmerized. You won't want to miss Grammy Award winning Living Colour, who will perform a number of their hits on Thursday, August 21st, including "Cult of Personality," which won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.

Closing out the Horizon Foundation Sounds of the City outdoor concert series on August 28th it's Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, featuring guitarist Vernon Reid of Living Colour and conductor Greg Tate, performing sets in tribute to James Brown and Steely Dan in an exciting mix of musical tradition and cutting-edge technology.
