"I have faith that love will find you out in those fields where you wander."

Outside Mullingar

You will savor every moment of the play, Outside Mullingar now onstage at George Street Playhouse (GSP) through November 2nd. Directed by David Saint, George Street Playhouse opens its season with a show that is sure to please metropolitan area audiences. Written by John Patrick Shanley, Outside Mullingar is set in the provincial countryside of Ireland. While it is full of "Irishness," the sentiments in this story are truly universal. This play is the real thing, thoroughly entertaining and full of genuine humor and heart.

Anthony is 40 something and has spent his entire life working on the family cattle farm in rural Ireland. The fate of the homestead hangs in the balance as Anthony's father, Tony threatens to disinherit him. Rosemary lives at the neighboring farm and she has been enamored with Anthony since their childhood. But Rosemary is facing real changes in her life with the loss of her father and her mother, Aoife is in poor health. Complicating matters is a petty land feud between the two families for the "right of way." Is the romance between Anthony and Rosemary destiny or headed for disaster?

The stellar cast of four is ideally suited to their roles. David Schramm as Tony Reilly completely captures the part of the contentious and stubborn, but charming patriarch. John Bolger as Anthony Reilly conjures immediate affection as he brings a true sense of humanity to his introverted character. Patricia Conolly plays Aolife Muldoon, a warm, wonderful woman and a real voice of reason. Ellen McLaughlin plays Rosemary Muldoon and it is this character who brings the plot full circle. She is feisty and steadfast in her objective to have the love of her life, yet completely thoughtful. The onstage chemistry between these renowned actors is absolutely superb.

David Saint said that he knew when he saw Outside Mulligar in New York that he wanted to bring it to George Street. And, it is his artful direction that breathes full life to Shanley's wonderful piece of writing.

The creative team's talents shine bright with scenic design by R. Michael Miller, costume design by David Murin, lighting design by Joe Saint and sound design by Scott Killian. Killucan, Ireland has been brought to the George Street Stage.

Outside Mullingar is funny, touching and a tribute to the deep and abiding love that exists between individuals. The 90 minute play is totally absorbing. It is a gift to metropolitan area audiences.
