Join Walking Shadow Theatre Company for a staged reading of its newest Commission Submission script: Hatchet Lady (or, Carrie Nation: Destroyer of Worlds), written by Savannah Reich and directed by John Heimbuch.

The reading is set for this Saturday, October 22nd, at 2pm. FREE with a discussion after the reading. No reservations are necessary. The performance will take place at Phoenix Theater, 2605 Hennepin Ave Minneapolis, MN 55408.

Featuring: Maren Ward, Charlotte Calvert, and Lillian Noonan. Music by Luc Parker of Omega Defender Performed by Katherine Seggerman, Britt Collis, and Pamela Laizure.

From playwright Savannah Reich: "I am interested in a skewed retelling of Carrie Nation and the Women's Temperance Movement. Nation has remained in the popular imagination as a symbol of all that is unsexy and dour ... but I see her as an early radical feminist, engaged in uncompromising direct action for the safety of women. When Carrie Nation smashed a bar, she was not smashing the idea of 'having a good time', she was smashing the culture's complacent outlook on female powerlessness and domestic violence."

Savannah Reich is a playwright and screenwriter based in Chicago and Minneapolis. Her work has been produced by Bedlam Theater, Box Wine Theater, All Terrain Theater (San Francisco), Anam Cara Theater (Asheville NC), and Der Vorfuhreffekt (Philadelphia PA). She also produces work with her company, Eternal Cult, and tours it to warehouses, art galleries, bars and basements across the country. Her plays have twice appeared on the Honorable Mention section of the Kilroys List, and her screenplay "Deep Sea Divers of 1929" was the winner of the Sloan Student Grand Jury Prize. She holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing from Carnegie Mellon University, and is a 2016-2017 Playwrights' Center Core Apprentice.

Walking Shadow likes new work. Last year, we put out an open call for playwrights to send brief descriptions of ideas they were interested in exploring. Savannah's proposal was selected from over 100 applications. We provided a writing stipend, plus a development workshop with actors and director. The next step in the process is putting the new play in front of an audience, so please join us!
