Emanuel Ax plays The Lyric March 6 at 7:00pm

"Mr. Ax . . . played with youthful brio, incisive rhythm, bountiful imagination, delicacy when called for and thundering power when the piano fought back." -- The New York Times

Widely regarded as one of the best classical pianists in the world, Emanuel Ax commands a repertoire ranging from the classics to the work of 20th century composers.

The Juilliard-trained Ax first captured public attention in 1974 when he won the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition. He won the Avery Fisher Prize in 1979.

Ax's exceptionally diverse performances feature contemporary composers such as Sir Michael Tippett, Hans Werner Henze, Joseph Schwantner and Paul Hindemith, as well as the more traditional Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. He has premiered works by John Adams, Christopher Rouse, Krzysztof Penderecki, Bright Sheng and MeLinda Wagner.

Ax often performs with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and together the two have recorded a series of Grammy-winning releases. Other collaborations include performances with Itzhak Perlman, Peter Serkin, Jamie Laredo and the late Isaac Stern, among others.

Ax has taken the stage at such venerable venues as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood and Chicago's Orchestra Hall. We are honored to welcome him to the Lyric.
