Paul Yen announced today the world premiere of Secret Identity Crisis, a super one-man show that asks, "Is ASIAN the mask we choose, or the mask we're given?" Yen reimagines three iconic superheroes to examine the history of Asians in America and his own struggle with identity in the film industry.

Weaving in his humorous observations and personal experiences, Yen explores the different masks Asian Americans wear through the eyes of Superman, a model minority who stands for truth, justice, and the American way; Batman, whose wealth doesn't free his family from discrimination; and Spiderman, a young adult facing his responsibility to help his immigrant family and community.

Secret Identity Crisis was awarded a 2017 Fringe Scholarship, which gives diverse artists a platform to present unique, underrepresented themes and/or narratives, with grants supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

"In a Hollywood that routinely ignores or whitewashes ethnic characters, the idea of an Asian American hero may still be revolutionary," said Paul Yen. "But I hope to show that Asian American heroes have been in our country all along."
