Coeurage Theatre Company, LA's Pay What You Want Company, has announced the extension and re-opening of Urinetown: The Musical. With music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, book by Kotis, musical direction by Gregory Nabours, and directed by Kari Hayter, the extended run will begin on Friday, January 6 at 8pm and continue through February 25 at the Historic Lankershim Arts Center.
Urinetown: The Musical has played to sold-out audiences and has been designated as 'Ovation Recommended" by LA Stage Alliance. BroadwayWorld.com raved, "The entire ensemble of 16 [consists of] triple-threat performers who make the stage come alive with their daunting singing, dancing, and acting." And EdgeMediaNetwork.com said, "... the show boasts a timeless appeal, which is beautifully realized in Coeurage Theatre Company's irresistible and enthralling production."
Urinetown: The Musical is a wicked, irreverent satire that tells an earnest tale of love, greed, and revolution - the story of an urban city plagued by a 20-year drought where water has become so scarce that private toilets are unthinkable. Through the determination of destitute masses, a hero among them rises to lead his fellow citizens in rebellion against the tyrannical corporation holding a monopoly over the town's most private and basic needs. Nominated for 10 Tony Awards, Urinetown won three, for Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction of a Musical. Fifteen years later, it remains uncomfortably topical.
The cast features (in alphabetical order) Logan Allison, Shakil Azizi, Ethan Barker, Ted Barton, Jason Beaubien, Daniel Bellusci, Danny Bernardo, Taylor Bracken, Katie Canavan, Chris Carlisle, Robert Collins, Maxwell Corpuz, Nicole Garcia, Cristina Gerla, William Aric Goldstein, Valerie Zisser Gould, Ashley Kane, Gary Lamb, Melissa Lehman, Nicole Monet, Rob Murray, Brian O'Sullivan, Jamie Pierce, Helen Planchet, Robert Ramirez, Kim Reed, Janet Song, Brooke Van Grinsven, Tyler Vaughn, and Paul Wong.
Scenic design is by Matt Scarpino, lighting design is by Brandon Baruch, costume design is by Emily Brown-Kucera, and sound design is by James Ferrero. Choreography is by Christopher M. Albrecht, and the stage manager is Abe Luke Rodriguez.
Director Kari Hayter most recently directed Rock of Ages for Summer Repertory Theatre and Parade at CSU/Northridge. She has worked at South Coast Repertory, Antaeus Theatre Company, and the Chance Theatre and she directed Lysistrata Jones (West Coast premiere), Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Hairspray for the Chance Theatre, and Chicago, Proof, The Laramie Project and Art for Torrance Theatre Company. Hayter also directed A Streetcar Named Desire, Songs for a New World, The Diary of Anne Frank, Romeo and Juliet, [title of show], 365 Days, Almost Maine, Illyria, Judevine, and RENT at CSU/Fullerton. She is a professor at CSU/Northridge where she teaches musical theatre history and performance.
Urinetown: The Musical re-opens on Friday, January 6 at 8pm. The regular running schedule is Friday and Saturday at 8pm through February 25. All seats are available on a Pay What You Want basis and may be reserved online at www.coeurage.org/urinetown or by calling (323) 944-2165.
