The spheres of fine art and the real world collide - and repel each other. The composer Fritz has a siren-like sound in the ear, which he follows traveling through the world. Back he leaves his beloved Greta. You should be married by her father to a restaurant host. The girl flees the family home and follows Fritz. Ten years later, she finds herself in a House of Pleasure, where they stimulate a competition: The man who distracts them from their yearning for love is most effective, they should receive as a prize. Since Fritz comes and Grete is clear who is the winner of this contest. But as the artist is aware, on what he is for a location, he encounters his former love horror of himself. A few years later they meet again. Grete is outlawed as a streetwalker socially, flunked Fritz as an opera composer. Gravely ill, he senses that he has squandered his fortune himself and longs for Grete. In her arms for the last time he hears the distant sound - as strong as ever.

For Franz Schreker, the music is at the center of his opera, the note drawn up by himself libretto is action-driving element and scenic stylistic device. By combining various compositional techniques creates an oscillating coexistence of different soundscapes. An acoustic realities ajar moments, like tavern noise or milieu-specific dance music here are just as much for musical theater dramaturgy as a native of other spheres "distant sound".
