Internationally acclaimed performer and choreographer Dr. Maha Gingrich will present the 15th anniversary show of "Dances of India," a community outreach initiative of Central Piedmont Community College, on the college's Halton Theater stage on April 29.

This year's performance will feature more than 60 dancers performing many of the dances audiences have enjoyed the most during the show's 14-year history, as well as new choreography. Attendees will delight in watching India's rich, 3,000-year-old classical dances brought to life using traditional costumes, back drops and props. They'll also enjoy watching popular dances, such as the "Peacock and Snake" and Bhrangra dances, featuring live, creating an unforgettable experience for all.

And, in classic "Dances of India" tradition, the evening will close with the show's signature dance, "Unity in Diversity," featuring a mezzo soprano from Opera Carolina and live international instruments, such as a rubab, a strung instrument from Afghanistan. A variety of unique dance styles such as Bharatha Natyam, Kuchipudi and Kathak, as well as dances that include the folk traditions of South India, North India, West India, Ukraine, Latin America, China, Russia, Puerto Rico and others will be featured.

Under Gingrich's direction, "Dances of India" has received a number of accolades, including being named one of the top nine memorable events among the nation's community colleges by Community College Week. Gingrich, who danced professionally in her native India, has been teaching dance in Charlotte since 1986. Trained in three different dance traditions, Bharatha Natyam, Kuchipudi and Kathak, she has a great love for these dance forms and keeping the heritage alive in this community while sharing the message of unity in diversity with residents at the regional level and beyond.
