Monday, October 27 at 9:00 pm there will be a special performance at State 72 / The Triad, 158 West 72 Street (just off Broadway). Written and performed by Jon Peterson, "He Wrote Good Songs" is the story of Anthony Newley, the legendary British actor, singer, song-writer, director.

"He Wrote Good Songs" is a marvelous tour de force performance by Jon Peterson. It is a moving portrayal of highs and lows in the life of the multitalented man: his turbulent life, his many loves, the desperation of a man innately wise to the charade that is show business. Newley was a man possessed with too many talents. Jon Peterson is a veteran of many Broadway and West End shows. This show includes twenty of Newley's incredible songs driving home this tale of a man inspired, a show business legend. The Musical Director is Bruce Barnes.

Jon Peterson was born in London. He had a passion for Show Business. At seven years old, he began dance classes and at the age of nine, got into the Royal Ballet School as a Junior Associate. Less than two years later, at just eleven he won a place at the famous Royal Ballet School. His passion had always been for musicals. Thus began his distinguished career on both sides of the Atlantic. Mr. Peterson's West End and various UK National Tour credits include: The Sound Of Music with Petula Clarke (Rolf); A Chorus Line (Paul); Dames At Sea (Lucky); She Loves Me, Y (Revue); Sophisticated Ladies; Cavalcade (Joey)' Whoop-H-Dee-Doo! (Revue); Definitely Doris (Revue); Cats (Skimbleshanks, Mistofolees); On Your Toes; and Blitz! (Georgie). In the US, Jon has performed in National Tours and Regional productions of: Half A Sixpence (Arthur Kipps) - Goodspeed Opera House; The World Goes Round (Man #1); The Rocky Horror Show (Frank 'n' Furter); Cabaret(National Tour -Emcee) -- nominee National Broadway Theatre Award Best Actor in a Musical; A Chorus Lin (Paul), and Sophisticated Ladies. An on Broadway he has appeared as the Emcee in CABARET. Some other Off Broadway and area credits include: George M. Cohan Tonight!(George M - Drama Desk Award nominee, Best Solo Performance, 2006 Drama League Honoree, Connecticut Critics' Circle Award, Outstanding Actor in a Musical); Have A Heart, and The George M. Cohan Revue (George) -- Bistro Award Best Performer in a Revue. He also starred in Cabaret (Emcee) John Engeman; and Singin' In The Rain (Cosmo Brown) - Ogunquit Playhouse (nominee: IRNE Award Best Supporting Actor). His acclaimed show Song Man Dance Man has been performed throughout the country including (Milwaukee Rep, and in 2011/12/ Los Angeles & Off-Broadway - nominee: Connecticut Critics' Circle Award, Outstanding Actor in a Musical/Outstanding Musical [writer]). Some of his feature films include: "Death's Waiting Room," "Like The Spider," "The Color of War," "Human After All," "Face To Face," "Penny Saver," "Proverbia," "Anna Ballerina," "Mail Order Wife," "Surving Picasso," "Chish 'N' Fips,"as well as various television work. Anthony Newley had a career that spanned more than 50 years. He embraced film, repertory theatre, rock and roll, comedy revues, music hall and television. His film career began at fourteen, and later was the Artful Dodger in David Lean's "Oliver Twist." In the 1950s & 60s, Newley was everywhere: on the screen, television and, seven times, in the top ten. He is known for co-writing and starring in the musical"Stop The World - I Want To Get Off" - a landmark in British musicals and Broadway hit with the songs "Gonna Build a Mountain," "Once In A Lifetime," and "What Kind of Fool Am I?" (selling more than a million records, and won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year). It became his signature tune. He followed that show with "The Roar Of The Greasepaint -- The Smell Of The Crowd," with the popular songs "Feeling Good," "Who Can I Turn To," "The Joker," "On A Wonderful Day Like Today." He also had a number of best-selling hit singles, including "The Candy Man" and "Goldfinger." He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Newley co-wrote the score for the film "Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory." He also wrote scores for other films and stage productions. He became one of the very few British crooners to make it big on the US cabaret circuit and In 1977 he was voted the Male Musical Star of the Year in Las Vegas. Some of his later film appearances included "Doctor Dolittle," "Sweet November," "Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" and "The Old Curiosity Shop." The BMI database lists over 150 songs for which Newley wrote the music or lyrics. His four U.S. hit songs were "Why?," "If She Should Come to You," "Pop Goes the Weasel" and "What Kind of Fool Am I?" By contrast, he had 12 hit singles in three years in the U.K Newley went from child star to pop idol, to composer, author, director and leading man and leaves an amazing body of work.
