GIRL BE HEARD (girlbeheard.org), the New York City-based nonprofit theatre company that empowers young women to become brave, confident, socially conscious leaders, brings you a special night of art and activism, highlighting the work created over the past year by young women and girls on Thursday, May 21st at 7:30 pm at The Cutting Room.

"Girl Be Heard's season honors women and girls in our local community and across the globe who are working hard each day to rise above adversity, such as systemic racism and poverty," says Artistic Director Ashley Marinaccio. "In each of our new shows created and performed by Girl Be Heard company members, our writers and performers shared personal stories of resiliency."

The night will feature excerpts from America's Dirty Secret, Generations, Displaced, and Girl Power. Following the performance will be the announcement for Girl Be Heard's 2015-2016 season lineup. This season, Girl Be Heard company members explored topics ranging from the international refugee crisis, homelessness and the welfare system in New York City, personal identity, and the realities of being a girl in 2015. Through all of these productions, a theme of resilience has emerged. Over the past year, the company launched Across Borders, bringing workshops and performances to communities around the US and the world. This season's tours have included engagements in Portland, Denmark, Switzerland, the UK, and Taiwan.

Girl Be Heard provides a safe environment for girls to write, direct and perform theatre productions under the guidance of professional directors, playwrights, actors, activists and intellectuals. Girl Be Heard's performances have received critical acclaim from The White House, The United Nations, the New Yorker, The New York Times, Huffington Post, Ebony Magazine, National Public Radio, and media outlets across the globe.
