NBC NEWS Goes Big for 2016 Rio Olympics This August

Starting Monday, August 1, NBC News begins its coverage of the Games of the xxI Olympiad from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with Matt Lauer reporting live from Copacabana Beach for "TODAY." Additionally, Lester Holt will begin anchoring "NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt" live from Copacabana on Thursday, August 4.

"TODAY" will once again begin America's day with great stories and adventures from the host city of the 2016 Olympic Games. Anchored by Matt Lauer, Hoda Kotb, Al Roker, Natalie Morales and Billy Bush together in Rio starting August 8, with Savannah Guthrie anchoring from New York, "TODAY" will also feature reports from Tom Brokaw, Jenna Bush Hager and Keir Simmons in Brazil. Located in Copacabana Beach, "TODAY" will once again broadcast from the portable Olympic Pavilion that was also used in Athens, Torino, Beijing, London, and Sochi. During the course of the 2016 Olympic Games, "TODAY" will give viewers an all-access pass to everything Olympic, going behind-the-scenes and profiling key athletes throughout the competition. The show will also feature exclusive performances, with The Band Perry slated to play August 11 from Rio as part of the "Citi Summer Concert Series on TODAY." The show will air live from Copacabana through August 19.

"NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt" will report on the most important issues of the 2016 Olympic Games, featuring unparalleled behind-the-scenes access and interviews with the athletes making headlines in Rio. Covering breaking news and all angles of the 2016 Olympic Games, Nightly News will feature reporting from its team of correspondents, including Peter Alexander, Miguel Almaguer, Stephanie Gosk, Ron Mott and Chris Jansing, with additional contributions from "TODAY" anchors and correspondents. Holt will anchor live from Rio through August 19.

Both "TODAY" and "Nightly News" continue to cover compelling stories leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Starting later this month, "TODAY" will catch up with American Olympic heroes of years past. And starting Monday, August 1, Nightly News will feature NBC News correspondents reporting live from Brazil on the key issues affecting the 2016 Rio Olympics.

As previously announced by NBC Olympics, Matt Lauer, Hoda Kotb and Meredith Vieira, special correspondent for "TODAY," will host the Opening Ceremony on Friday, August 5.

Rio 2016 will be Matt Lauer's 11th Olympics for "TODAY," and his fifth in a role on the primetime Opening Ceremony broadcast. This marks Lester Holt's 8th Olympics for NBC News and his first as full-time anchor of "Nightly News." Meredith Vieira works her third Opening Ceremony for NBC. Hoda Kotb previously worked at multiple Olympics for NBC News including in Athens (2004), Torino (2006), Beijing (2008) and London (2012).
