Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat "King" Cole. He plays piano and sings and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday, and his timing swings a little more. His vocals - suave, elegant, formidable, and articulate - are among the most respected in jazz.

An Old School Double Bill Night To Remember!
Zapp is a soul and funk band formed in 1978 by brothers Roger Troutman, Larry Troutman, Lester Troutman, and Terry Troutman. Known for hits such as "More Bounce to the Ounce," "Dance Floor," "Computer Love" and "I Wanna Be Your Man," the group was a partial source of inspiration to West Coast hip hop and G-funk. Zapp's hand-clapped, drum-beat styled funk of Zapp's records and Roger's use of the talk box became another reason for the group's impact and its success.

Singer/songwriter Shirley Murdock is best known for the ethereal ballad "As We Lay," which was produced by Roger Troutman. Murdock started out singing gospel music in her native Toledo. Troutman hired her as a background singer for his family's group Zapp, who had several hits on Warner Brothers (or its Reprise imprint). Based on this success, Troutman began recording tracks with Murdock and lead singer Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players, among others, at his Dayton-based recording studio Troutman Sound Labs. Murdock's brand new inspirational CD & DVD LIVE: THE JOURNEY (Tyscot Records/Oct 2011) features the Top 30 Radio single, "Dream." She recently performed this song at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Dedication in Washington DC a few weeks ago. The project also features special guests Kelly Price, Regina Belle, and Beverly Crawford.
