Making his Joe's Pub debut, Brooklyn-based, Venezuelan-born Migguel Anggelo
is a dynamic singer and dancer known for his electric stage performances. Cutting his teeth in the worlds of musical theater and opera, Anggelo brings the larger-than-life emotions of the stage to his more intimate shows. Backed by a string band, he performs works by Latin American greats like Agustin Lara and Astor Piazzolla, original compositions that explore topics like Frida Kahlo and dictatorship, and American pop, jazz, and opera standards that he recasts in his own signature style.
Anggelo is thrilled to welcome special guest and jazz great Claudia Acuña to this performance. The artist's most recent project, the forthcoming album LA CASA AZUL, produced by Mau Quiros and mixed by Grammy winner Felipe Tichauer, will be launched in 2014. Allison Moorer celebrates her roots with this show, performing new and old songs about the South. In the past three years, the Academy Award-nominated singer-songwriter has welcomed a son, recorded and toured as part of Steve Earle & The Dukes and Duchesses, and also wrote the song "Oklahoma Sky," which closed Miranda Lambert's 2011 hit album Four The Record. Moorer's seventh and latest studio album, Crows (2010), the follow up to her much-celebrated Buddy Miller-produced Mockingbird (2008), received worldwide critical acclaim. The Huffington Post proclaimed that she is "blessed with one of the best voices of her generation." Moorer has been featured on releases by Joan Baez, Kid Rock, Steve Earle, The Chieftains and Los Straightjackets. Dream-pop artist Nasimiyu brings her composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist zing to her forthcoming EP dirt. Her genre falls somewhere on the earthier, dirtier, brassier side of the indie pop spectrum. Think Talking Heads plus Etta James -- on a safari.
Nasimiyu came up in a half-Kenyan, half-Scandinavian household in Minneapolis. She rounded out her sound studying under street performers, voodoo practitioners and marching band musicians for four years in New Orleans. She now moves and shakes in eclectic artist circles in Brooklyn. Nasimiyu worked on dirt across several time zones with co-producers Andreas Gustafsson in Sweden and Ben Lorio in New Orleans. dirt features guest players Kalmia Traver of Rubblebucket, Mike Bass of Trombone Shorty and the New Orleans bass band, Naughty Professor. The presence of the pesticides of "Big Ag" and the struggle by bees to survive, is inspiration for new songs, songs with lots of Bee-atitude, hard work and sticky sweetness. Honeybeelujah!
Reverend Billy and his singing-activists ask: What time is this? Time to party before the plague? Or is it more like the 20's between world wars? In 2014, stepping on stage amidst fire and drought, freak storms and extinction, there seems to be a strange joy in these first days of apocalypse. They seek to rededicate themselves and others to the politicizing of survival, pitting our freedom against the financiers of climate change.

Kavita Shah, a visionary young singer and composer from New York, celebrates the release of her album Visions. A self-portrait in mosaic form, Visions interweaves Shah's multicultural background with her wide-ranging musical influences, combining the Indian tablas and West African kora with a traditional jazz quintet. Mike Daisey travels to a mysterious world located just 90 miles from America-the island nation of Cuba, a world frozen in the American imagination and burned from our memories by embargoes and blockades, where communism still rules and a ballet dancer is paid the same as a surgeon or a farmer. The granddaughter and daughter of Hank Williams, Sr. and Hank Williams, Jr. respectively, makes her independence evident on her third studio album - The Highway - released on her own imprint, Georgiana Records, earlier this year. New York's klezmer-rock band Golem returns to the Pub to celebrate their newest album Tanz, released on Corasón Digital in May 2014. Founded by Annette Ezekial Kogan in 2000, the band has become the leading re-interpreter and innovator of Yiddish and Eastern European music, pushing the traditions into the 21st Century. Golem is known for their theatricality and fearless wild energy mixed with a boundless love of tradition. Jewish Week called the band, "not your father's klezmer band, unless of course, your father was Sid Vicious." Jazz vocalist and bandleader Michael Mwenso offers a collection of shameless and explicit tunes from the 1920s and1930s that were banned from being broadcast in their era. The playful nature of these songs is timeless not simply because they are funny and over-the-top, but because they are a reminder that romance and sexuality are, and always have been, universal human experiences. This will be an exhilarating and rowdy night of jazz, wit and delight plus a few surprises.
A fixture of the Uptown jazz scene, Mwenso brings his signature style and vocal chops Downtown to the Pub. From a young age, the Sierra Leone-born singer and pianist has held his own with artists like James Brown in addition to playing in and leading his own bands around the world. In late 2010, Mwenso, personally invited by Wynton Marsalis, joined the programming team at Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he now heads the After-Hours program at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. In his growing and remarkable career, Michael has performed with Jon Hendricks, Jamie Cullum, Reginald Veal, Maceo Parker, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marsalis and more.

Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Line are a traveling carnival of acoustic Americana, on tour in support of their aptly named albumCarnival (2013). The high energy, Nashville-based quintet performs Struthers's original story-songs with tight, three-part harmonies, fiddle, claw-hammer banjo, acoustic guitar, bass and drums. "When you go to a carnival, you go into a sideshow tent, and on every stage you find a different person with a different story," says Struthers. "That's what I'm trying to do with this album - craft vignettes, and in some cases more developed narratives, about imaginary people's lives." The moving, perceptive and witty songs on Carnivalrepresent a quantum leap for Struthers, born of hard work and deep reflection. "Over the past three years, as I've been touring and performing, I realized that primarily I'm a storyteller," she says. "I've been working to hone my skills so I can do that better."
The Party Line, named after a Carnival track that refers to the early days of rural telephone calls, includes: Joe Overton (clawhammer banjo and harmony vocals), Jack Devereaux (fiddle), Nick DiSebastian (upright bass and guitar) and Drew Lawhorn (drums). Struthers was catapulted into the spotlight when she led her band to a Blue Ribbon at the prestigious 2010 Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
