Dinner & Show: The Re-Vamped CLIFTON'S CAFETERIA

Clifton's Cafeteria, originally opened in 1935, has been an integral part of Downtown Los Angeles history feeding the masses, open to all whether they could afford it or not. Entrepreneur Andrew Meieran, 80 years later, has re-vamped this architectural relic and transformed it into an ultimate destination for an ideal Dinner & Show combo. Meiran bought the 648 S. Broadway property (formerly known as Clifton's Brookdale) in 2010 and had its grand re-opening as Clifton's Cafeteria in late 2015.

Meieran took the time from his busy Sunday to answer BroadwayWorld's questions.

What attracted you to Clifton's in 2010?

I always found Clifton's intriguing-- as a time capsule and a peek into the past. It exemplified an era in its architecture and fantasy theming, though it seemed quite forlorn, and in need of some help, in order for it to survive. I felt it would be lost to the future if someone didn't step in and revitalize it, and help become a catalyst to revitalize the rest of the Broadway corridor.

What were your initial plans for updating/reviving Clifton's Cafeteria?

Initially, I planned to restore the original portions and add one or two new venues in underutilized storage areas. I wanted to add two nightlife venues in order to activate the entire property for longer hours and bring life to an area that basically become an abandoned wasteland after around 8pm.

Any unforeseen major obstacle make you re-envision your plans?

Literally everything! The systems were in much, much worse condition that I originally anticipated. Opening up any wall exposed worse problems. I realized we needed to shut down the property and nearly start from scratch with the infrastructure.

What aspect of your revamp are you most proud of?

The addition of spaces that were inspired by the original. They keep the legacy of innovation and imagination alive in new ways-- particularly Cathedral Grove and the giant Redwood.

You studied architecture, film and history at UC Berkeley. Which is your first love?

My first love is history-- and my love of that led to my interest in film and architecture. Film captures the spirit and imagination of a culture and passes it on. Architecture is the physical embodiment of a culture's values and ideals and represent its physical achievement and how it perceives its place in history.

You are the architect design mastermind behind the Metzger Mansion in San Francisco, the Moorcrest in Hollywood Hills (once owned by Charlie Chaplin and, later, Mary Astor), and The Edison Downtown, before revitalizing Clifton's. What would you say is the signature Andrew Meieran element in your restoration/remodels?

I like to think that I've been inspired by the original structures and their history and I use that as a foundation to tell their story and bring it to new generations.

Tell me a little bit about the present Clifton's Cafeteria vs. the original Clifton's for our BWW readers.

The original Clifton's was solely a cafeteria, though there were times when it provided entertainment. It was focused on volume and basic value. Though we still emphasize value, it is a much broader experience, allowing guests to explore a broad range of environments. They can find what they are looking for-- from a great meal with the family to an intimate cocktail in any of a number of settings.

What are the various venues at Clifton's, aside from the Cafeteria? Does each aim for a different clientele?

Currently there are four separate venues within Clifton's-- with three more coming very soon. The Monarch Bar is more a local bar, aimed at a more informal and casual clientele. The Gothic Bar and Brookdale Ballroom are more heightened experiences, with more upscale offerings and a more distinctive experience. Dress code is required for these areas and people often show up in vintage attire. The Tiki bar is opening at the end of June, with an additional high-end cocktail lounge opening about 45 days later.

What are Clifton's Cafeteria's popular dishes?

Clifton's Classics are very popular-- the Mac&Cheese, Roast Turkey and incredible hand- crafted sandwiches. Specialty desserts (like our Jello Beach) are extremely popular and heighten the experience-- making it more than just a meal!

Clifton's host various shows in its venue. What's coming in the near future?

This Memorial Day weekend we have our first CLIFTON'S CANTEEN-- a nod to the USO shows of the past and part of our immersive theater experience. In particular, we are launching a whole line of these shows where the entire environment becomes the stage. In addition, we have particular programming throughout on various nights, with DJ's live performances, bands and other media creating unique and different environments in all areas-- even the same night.

Do you take reservations in the Cafeteria? In the other venues?

We take reservations for parties and specific events. Clifton's has a policy of "you bring the party and we supply the cake" which brings lots of celebrations-- from birthdays to anniversaries etc. If a party is planning to be there for something special, we can always accommodate them.

What would you suggest as a comfortable time to get here for a Friday or Saturday 8pm curtain?

I'd come about half an hour early in order to explore and find an area you like. There are always so many options that exploration is always suggested!

How about a comfortable time for a Sunday matinee with a 3pm curtain?

Same answer! Though Sundays tend to be very busy, and thus, I'd give time to stake out a spot.

How late do you stay open for post-show munchies?

We usually stay open at least two hours after shows, and allow for people to continue to enjoy the atmosphere. We offer coffee, snacks and desserts until closing at the cafe.

Full-bar with any specialty drinks?

Always a full bar and specialty drinks created for those specific experiences!

Easy to find parking/valet?

Valet parking is offered most nights and there is tons of nearby parking (within three blocks). There are two lots across the street for inexpensive, convenient parking.

Any other info on Clifton's Cafeteria you'd like to add?

Clifton's is one of the most unique venues in the nation (if not the world!) It takes several visits to get a sense of the entire space and we highly encourage adventure and exploration!
