STAGE & SCREEN Series Will Continue 1/7 With 'Do the Right Thing' and 'Invisible Man'

The Coolidge Corner Theatre and the Huntington Theatre Company continue their collaboration entitled "Stage & Screen," a series that explores the depictions of shared themes in Huntington productions and acclaimed films.

The next event, a screening of Spike Lee's powerful 1980 drama, Do the Right Thing, will be at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline on Monday, January 7 at 7pm. The film chronicles a series of events that bring festering racial tensions to the surface on the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Samuel L. Jackson, Rosie Perez, and John Turturro, Do the Right Thing sparked controversy while earning popular and critical praise.

A conversation with playwright and screenwriter Oren Jacoby and others from the Huntington's production of Invisible Man about how Ellison's and Lee's works have informed the dialog about race in America will follow the film.

Working closely with Ralph Ellison's estate, the Academy Award-nominated Jacoby has adapted Ellison's landmark American novel Invisible Man for the stage. The Huntington's production plays January 4 - February 3 at the Avenue of the Arts / BU Theatre. The play begins as the novel does: "I am an invisible man," and tells the story of an idealistic young African-American man searching for identity and his place in the world as he makes an epic journey through 1930s AmericA. Ellison's novel about race, power, freedom, and liberty comes to life in this Jefferson Award-winning gripping theatrical adaptation.

Tickets to Do the Right Thing are $10 / $7 for Coolidge members and Huntington Theatre Company subscribers (with member ID). Tickets may be purchased online at coolidge.org or at the Coolidge box office, located at 290 Harvard Street, Brookline.
