LillIan Smith (1897-1966) was a white southern liberal writer, unafraid to criticize segregation at a time when such actions almost guaranteed social ostracism. Lulu Fogarty tells of this brave woman's life-long struggle to be heard, daring to say "Although we have come a long way - there is still a long way to go."

LillIan Smith wrote the majority of her groundbreaking works just up the road in Clayton, Ga. Ms. Fogarty has spent the several weeks during the last 7 summers in Lillian's old homestead, absorbing and communing with the fertile ground that clearly fueled the mind of one of the South's preeminent voices. This piece, that she has been performing since 2010, just continues to grow and stay fresh as current events continue to set us back in achievements of racial and sexual equality. Her words and Ms. Fogarty's are as topical and hard hitting as they have always been.

The LillIan Smith Center is now under the umbrella of Piedmont College and continues to house artists for retreats in multiple disciplines.

Recommended for: all audiences, teenagers, adults, elderly, theatre community, LGBT community, ethnic communities.

This performance is FREE and on a first come basis. It will be followed by a TALK BACK.
