Four-time Grammy Nominee and Tony Award Winner, R&B singer Melba Moore will be celebrating her birthday at Metropolitan Room on October 27 at 9:30pm. With a total of eleven top ten U.S. hits on the Billboard charts over the past 40 years, both singles and albums, Melba Moore continues into the 21st century as one of pop music's most enduring artists.

Moore started off as a music teacher but soon realized that a life in the classroom was not what she had envisioned for herself. She was introduced to several agents and was on track for a singing career by making backup tracks. This then lead to a part in an off-Broadway show and then she made the move to the bright lights of Broadway where she was cast as 'Dionne' in the original cast of Hair. After several months, she replaced Diane Keaton in the role of Sheila. (Keaton had started as a "Waitress" and had moved to "Sheila" a month or so after the Broadway opening. The interchangeability of cast members in this highly unconventional show made it possible for Moore to become the first African-American actress to replace a white actress in a lead role on Broadway).

Moore was pushed to a more acting-focused role when she was cast in the musical Purlie. Originally, she was assigned only one song, "Purlie," in the show, but she had such success with it in previews that gave her another, "I Got Love." This song was such a smash hit that it shot her to stardom. Not only did it supply the title to her debut album with Mercury Records, which earned her a 1971 Grammy nomination as Best New Artist, but it boosted her to the 1970 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, a 1970 Theatre World Award, and a 1970 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance.

Melba Moore then went to star in TV and then went on to make several very successful albums. Her album, "Peach Mleba," brought her a Grammy nomination. 1976 was a great year for Moore as she had five singles approaching the top of the charts and she received her third Grammy nomination for Best Rhythm and Blues Vocal Performance.

Moore went on to perform on Broadway and her music still went on to be chart topping! Come and celebrate Moore's birthday at the iconic Metropolitan Room, considered "Best Cabaret Spot in NYC" by Zagat. - "This Flatiron "class act" aims to revive the "golden age of cabaret" as "up-and-coming stars" and "renowned performers" alike take the stage in an "intimate" room with "great acoustics"; run with "professionalism" by a "gracious staff", it's "worth every penny" for a "sophisticated" night out.". - ZAGAT 2014
