IHLAZO!, which will be performed in Cape Town

Award-winning director Kobie van Rensburg returns to Cape Town to stage SCHANDE! | SKANDE! | SHAME! | IHLAZO!, a contemporary production created from the songs of Franz Schubert.

Schubert, a 19th-century composer, died of syphilis at the age of 32, lonely and ashamed. HIs songs represent the pinnacle of vocal art. SCHANDE! | SKANDE! | SHAME! | IHLAZO uses Schubert's songs to take the audience on a dramatic journey in search of atonement and acceptance. Loss and longing, violence and violation, love, sexually transmitted disease and death are explored through music, video projection and live blue-screen techniques.

SCHANDE! | SKANDE! | SHAME! | IHLAZO will be performed by Palesa Malieloa, Christine Bam, Ronald Melato and Nick de Jager, with Albie van Schalkwyk on piano. Performances will take place at the Nassau Theatre, which is on the premises of the Groote Schuur Hich School in Newlands on 20 May at 19:30 and 21 May at 16:00. Tickets cost R120 and can be booked by email through Hanna van Schalkwyk or by phone on 082 824 1007. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Additional performances of SCHANDE! | SKANDE! | SHAME! | IHLAZO will take place in Hout Bay, Kraaifontein, and Langa from 22 - 24 May. Workshops are also available for schools. For details, contact Mimi Makapela on 074 287 8562.
