BEFORE THE INAUGURATION - Immigrant Voices need to be HEARD!

As part of our ongoing efforts to advocate for the brilliant and diverse voices of immigrant artists, IASNY will be having its annual showcase NEW YORK WITH AN ACCENT at the storied Nuyorican Poets Café in the East Village. Featuring performances by outstanding IASNY members and NYC artists committed to multicultural dialogue, this event embodies the vision of IASNY as a forum for the exchange of ideas, the fostering of an immigrant voice, and a showcase of the breadth of talents in New York City's (immigrant) community. NEW YORK WITH AN ACCENT will be held Wednesday, January 18, 6-9 pm at Nuyorican Poets Café, located at 236 East 3rd Street between Avenues B and C.

FEATURED ARTISTS: Andrea Abello, Alisar Awwad, Xavier Clark, Cecilia Copeland, Oscar A. L. Cabrera, Renel David, Daniella De Jesús, Daniel Gallant, Aleah Quiñones, Ry Szelong, Saviana Stanescu, Nathan Yungerberg, and Afraz Khan, President of the NYU Muslim Students Association. Up-and-coming actress/writer Andrea Abello will be MC'ing.

The featured performers' 5-7 min presentations will be followed by a COMMUNITY FORUM on diversity and inclusion in challenging political times. Join us!!! In solidarity, IASNY

Featured artists include (in order of appearance):

Introductory remarks by Saviana Stanescu, founder of IASNY, Andrea Abello, MC of the evening, and Daniel Gallant, Executive Director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

Daniel Gallant is a writer, actor, producer, teacher, and the Executive Director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, as well as a 2016 Eisenhower Fellow.

Saviana Stanescu (www.saviana.com), the founder of IASNY, is a Romanian-born award-winning writer, educator, and ARTivist, author of "Aliens with extraordinary skills," and other plays about immigrants and outsiders.

Daniella De Jesús is an Afro-Dominican and Puerto Rican poet, playwright, and actor from pre-gentrified Bushwick, Brooklyn whose writing can be found in "Young, Colored & Angry," "Vagabond City Literary Journal," "Chiflada Magazine," and the upcoming film "Coco" (2016, directed by RZA)

Xavier Clark (www.xavier-clark.com) is a Middle Eastern and African American theatre artist interested in telling stories that deal with the intersection of race, religion and queerness.

Afraz Khan is a senior at NYU studying International Relations and serving as the President of the Muslim Students Association - he enjoys writing and performing spoken word pieces on his faith and identity.

Oscar A. L. Cabrera is a Mexican-American actor/playwright born and bred in a small town in Texas.

Aleah Quiñones is an Afro-Latina from Los Angeles, and is very excited to participate in this evening of art and timely conversation at NuYo.

Alisar Awwad is a theatre artist of Iranian and Syrian heritage, creator of the #TakeItBack photo campaign designed to spread love and awareness on Ithaca College's campus as a response to current political climate and excessive labeling.

Andrea Abello (www.andreaabello.com), your MC for this evening, is a Colombian-American actress, singer, and poet passionate about telling stories that authentically represent women, Latinx culture, and the intersection of these two.

IndigoGeneral is an up and coming emcee out of Harlem, who is a conscious warrior with a smooth direct flow!

Ry Szelong is a hapa director-writer-performer and aspiring optimist from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Nathan Yungerberg is one of the playwrights chosen for the 2017 Cherry Lane Mentor Project with Stephen Adly Guirgis, Semifinalist of 2016 O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, and winner of Ken Davenport 10-Minute Play Festival.

Cecilia Copeland is a playwright and screenwriter of Panamanian, Israeli, Welsh, and Iowa heritage who lives happily in her adopted home, New York City.
