BWW Reviews: Locals Take on LES MISERABLES at Theatre Three

It is always interesting to see a local production of the classic Tony winning musical LES MISERABLES. It is such a huge show and to perform it locally is a huge undertaking. However, if you have a wonderful cast and the fantastic direction of Jeffrey Sanzel, the production will turn out wonderfully as Theatre Three's did.

Running through November 2nd at the Port Jefferson venue, this is the story of Jean Valjean portrayed superbly by Steve McCoy. Set in 19th-century France, Valjean is on a quest for redemption after serving a long, harsh, and unimaginable jail sentence subsequently being shunned from society. MR. McCoy's powerful performance of Valjean made him a natural choice for the role.

After breaking his parole to start a new life, Valjean is inexorably tracked down by Police Inspector Javert, portrayed by Ed Brennan. Mr. Brennan was also very strong in this role. Having been in the title roles of Phantom, Man of La Mancha, and Jekyll and Hyde, Mr. Brennan was a great choice for the greatly feared police officer.

Tamaralynn Dorsa's heart wrenching performance of Fantine was a favorite that didn't leave a dry eye in the house. Fantine is a poor woman whose utmost concern is, of course, her daughter, Cosette portrayed by Katelyn Keating. Ms. Dorsa's emotionally stunning rendition of the iconic "I Dreamed a Dream" was received enthusiastically from the sold out audience.

To make ends meet after she is fired from her job, Fantine sells her belongings - including her hair - and turns to prostitution to continue to pay the Thénardiers to care for her daughter. The Thénardiers were hysterically portrayed by Jennifer Collester-Tully and James D. Schultz. Indeed another favorite was their comical performance of "Master of the House".

Also a highlight was Cristina Faicco as Eponine. Unfortunately, this didn't seem to be an overly huge part, but she is integral piece to the story. Ms. Faicco performed a beautiful version of "On My Own" that was well received as she sung about her secret love for Marius - portrayed by Brett Chizever - who is actually in love with Cosette.

Besides the thrilling cast, the orchestra was fantastic as well going through the show's twenty eight performances beautifully. Lead by Jack Kohl, the orchestra consisted of Alexandra Belinsky, Barry Schwalb, Rex Enderlin, Mike Chiusano, and Jim Carrol. Interestingly, they were located practically in the audience.

And so, this beautiful production of LES MISERABLES, kicks off Theatre Three's 44th season. They certainly have another hit on their hands. Wonderful direction and an astonishing cast make for a wonderful - if emotional- night of theatre.
