Siyabulela Sikawuti and David Dukas in HINTERLAND

The Artscape Theatre is set to present the much anticipated production, HINTERLAND, which forms part of this year's Heritage Festival at the Artscape Arena. Written by Duncan Buwalda and directed by Caroline Smart, the production was nominated for four Naledi Awards (Best Director of a Play, Best New South African Script, the Brett Goldin Award for Best Newcomer and Best Production of a Play).

HINTERLAND revolves around a fictional meeting of two giants of South African history. Cecil John Rhodes (David Dukas) and Sol Plaatje (Sia Sikawuti) meet while Kimberley is besieged during the Anglo-Boer War. In the autumn of his life, Rhodes, the king of diamonds, hires the young Plaatje as his new secretary, and the two develop the unlikeliest of friendships, full of humour, warmth and pathos. But the country is changing, and as Plaatje's political career begins to dawn, the two men become set on a collision course that will change both their lives.

HINTERLAND was first presented on the Arena Programme of the National Arts Festival in 2013. It played a return season in Grahamstown in 2014 and at Johannesburg's Auto & General Theatre on the Square in 2015.

HINTERLAND previews on 23 August, opens on 24 August and then runs through 1 September. Tickets cost R80, with a concession rate of R50 for block bookings, students and pensioners, and are available at Artscape Box Office, via Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7839 and at Computicket.
