Time at Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College

Time is a spectacular sound and light show by Luxmuralis, transforming the Old Royal Naval College after dark for the first time.

This immersive experience takes you on an unforgettable journey through history and science, exploring humanity’s relationship with the concept of time. Traverse wormholes, step inside the intricate workings of clocks, and follow a dramatic narrative that stretches from the present day back to the very beginning of the universe.

Along the way, you’ll encounter captivating installations that portray humans across different eras, inspired by the theories of relativity and H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine.

Your journey begins in the King William Undercroft, under the Painted Hall. From there, Time unfolds through the Ripley Tunnel, Queen Mary Undercroft and Chapel, before spilling outside across the Colonnades and into the Courtyard. With bespoke music, immersive projections and atmospheric architectural lighting, the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site is revealed in a vibrant, emotional new light.

The Painted Hall is not part of the Time event and experience, but access is available with your ticket (except for the 12th and 16th November) to see Peter Walker’s Connection & Identity art installations illuminated after dark.

In a fitting tribute to Greenwich as the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), Time voyages through the centuries – from the birth of the cosmos to the modern world – illuminating the baroque architecture of the Old Royal Naval College with awe-inspiring imagery and sound.
