The 1st Annual Toronto Jewish Playwriting Contest brings together the Jewish Plays Project, Miles Nadal JCC, Harold Green Jewish Theatre, Koffler Arts, and the Kultura Collective for an evening combining play readings, playwright video introductions, and live audience voting. Three finalists — Flatbush Lysistrata by Lila Rachel Becker, This Place Stinks by Jacob Surovsky, and Shura by Roee Joseph — will be presented as 20-minute excerpts read by a Canadian acting ensemble including Sarah Orenstein, Jonas Chernick, Ori Black, Hershel Blatt, Brittany Kay, and Anat Kriger. The evening will be directed and hosted by Illana Stein, with Hershel Blatt producing, and audiences will vote to select one winning play. The winner will receive a developmental workshop as part of the Festival of New Jewish Theater in fall 2026.
