What did New York City sound like? Where were you when Broadway announced its closing? What were you doing? Were you eating dumplings with too much soy sauce? Were you crying into your Chipotle? I was doing all of that and more. Actually, I was sitting in a dressing room. I was finishing the run of a musical called 'Good News' at Marymount Manhattan College. Here are a few snapshots of 'normalcy'.
Bella (MT class of 2022) and Emma (AT class of 2021) are two fantastic actresses with a little more experience under their belts. I was so happy that they took the time to answer these questions for me! And boy, did they have some awesome answers.
As much as we pretend that picking a favorite show is like 'Sophie's Choice,' we all have that one show that will always have the top place in our hearts. These are my assumptions about you based on that favorite musical.
Dr. Errik Hood, Music Assistant Professor of Vocal Performance at NYU Steinhardt, is creating a new breed of virtual productions. Or rather, a new feed.
Kim's Convenience is one of the greatest shows of all time. This show has heart, comedy and representation. Bet you didn't even know it was a stage play first. Why can't we have nice things? This show meant so much to so many. It represented Asian immigrants and just Asians in general. As a half Chinese child, I related a lot to Janet in particular. Janet dealt with a lot in the show and I related so much to her.
Anyone who knows me knows I make a mean romantic playlist. Without further ado, here are some musical theatre love songs for those days alone when you wish for someone to hold you.
I had just finished about four months of online learning when I started classes at UCM, so it was weird being on a campus again, especially with all the COVID-19 restrictions.
This past week I had the opportunity to speak with Eric about his theatre-related commentary tracks and how he believes the tracks fit into performance art as a whole. Enjoy, and Go Tigers!
Our student bloggers write about how they're coping with the current global health crisis, give insight on their school's performing arts programs, share their opinions on the latest theater news, and so much more. Choosing a school can feel overwhelming. Trust me, I’ve been there. In honor of the approaching “decision day,” I’m sharing my overall college takeaways and (slightly cursed) decision day story. Hopefully, it can help ease some worries, and at least let you know that you’re not alone.
I never thought I would miss the bottom halves of my friends’ faces as much as I have this past year. And yet, there isn’t a button we can push or a switch we can flip to send it all back.
Honestly, I was stumped for ideas on what to write this week, so I decided to share things that I enjoy: my personal favorite songs from a bunch of musicals--basically, recommending songs--one per musical. There’s no particular correlation to any of these other than that I like them all. I hope you enjoy!
With one year in the pandemic down, theatre is beginning to reemerge. One particular theatre, the Manhattan Class Company (MCC), has recently announced the return of their annual concert “Miscast”.
Whether choosing material for the next season of Next on Stage, an audition, or performance, finding the right song can feel as difficult as mastering the song itself. But choosing the right song – finding one that you really love to sing and can personally connect with – can make all the difference.
Currently spanning almost six hours long, this collection of songs include music that can raise my mood and make my day. There is no rhyme or reason to the songs I pick, beyond the rule that they need to bring me joy. I am a huge proponent of using music to relax and prepare for the day, and I think everyone could benefit from their own “Serotonin Songs” Playlist. There are many ways to go about creating this masterpiece, and I would like to share some insights to help you get started.
“I have an idea,” you say, “I am going to write a Newer, Cooler, and Better play than Lysistrata. We will perform my Newer, Cooler, and Better play instead.”
After four years at university I've picked up a few pieces of wisdom along the way. For some of you who don't have older siblings who went to college, myself included, I'd like to share with you some pieces of advice.
Gender may not be real, but I’d like to see these non-traditional castings become real! I am a big fan of MCC’s Miscast gala. I watch the performances every year and daydream about what I would sing, if I was ever so lucky to be a part of it. Because Miscast is a little over a month away, I have come up with some “miscast” castings of my own! I have cast women in roles traditionally played by men, and vice versa!
