Shakespeare’s Sweetest Rom-Com: ‘As You Like It’ Comes to Flight Path Theatre

The days are dark and dangerous. Orlando’s brother is treating him like a slave, and is plotting to kill him. Also fearing for her life, Rosalind has to flee the cold and controlling French court. Disguised as a man, she heads to the Forest of Arden, where she finds, under the greenwood trees, freedom, happiness and love. Full of music and mayhem, this is Shakespeare’s sweetest romantic comedy.

Written around 1599, this vibrant new production is directed by Alex Kendall Robson and is presented with a fresh, contemporary flavour.

“This play is timeless. It’s about escaping the constraints society puts on us, and discovering ourselves. Perhaps it’s just me being a cringey millennial, but I find that earnestness, that innocence, so sweet and endearing.”

The production stars Jade Fuda as Rosalind. Fuda previously appeared as Celia and Phebe in Sport for Jove’s production in 2021.

“I’m no stranger to donning a doublet and hose for the sake of making a man question his sexuality (in plays only, I swear), but stepping into Rosalind’s shoes feels like being armed in fortune — she carries her destiny with her.”

It also stars Pat Mandziy, recently seen as the god Dionysus in the acclaimed production The Frogs: In Hell They Sing Show Tunes at New Theatre.

Robson’s previous production of The Frogs directly inspired this joyful take on Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy.

“That show was such a joy to work on, and audiences could feel how much the actors loved every minute of it. That positive energy is catching, and I wanted to bring that same sense of fun and delight to audiences again — with many of the same cast and crew.”
