Review: RAT PACK RHAPSODY at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern
Brand new muscial about the legendars in the Rat Pack
A few days left until the opening night the 24th of April, but already it feels like this is going to be a success. This is a musical that will have bring a smile to your face from the first note to the last. The music, the singing, the dancing – pure enjoyment throughout!
Rat Pack Rhapsody is a newly written musical with 15 brand new songs combinde with classic songs from the era with the legendary trio Frank Sintra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.
The musical celebrates the trio's fantastic voices and careers while not shying away from highlighting their connections with the mafia, the endless rows of women in their life, alcohol, scandals and their closeness to the the Kennedys. The criminal connections were to some extent glorified in their lives. Something that is still common in some music circles today.
In a warm and humorous way, Joachim Bergström, Rennie Mirro and Alexander Larsson alternate between portraying Frankie, Dean and Sammy and being themselves, telling the story of the trio's lives.
Many women, mothers, wives and mistresses, have passed through their lives and Isabella Lundgren takes on all of them with quick changes of clothes and wigs and manages to capture the different personalities of Marilyn Monroe, Ava Garnder and others.
Rennie, Joachim, Alexander and Isabella are absolutely brilliant throughout the performance. That Rennie and Joachim love and know this music genre inside and out is nothing new and they are as good as usual.
Tonight and up to the 5th of May their ordinary third man Karl Dyall is absent due to injury, but we have the pleasure of seeing his understudy Alexander Larsson in the role of Sammy Davis Jr. and he is absolutely brilliant in his role. A true singer and dancer, a real entertiner, who shows that he can step up when needed. This time it is Alexander as the undersstudy who will star on the opening night feels a bit like fate. A few years ago he was injured in a bicycle accident just before the opening night of Moulin Rouge the musical and his understday covered on the openin night. But this time he gets to take the stage on the opening night.
Isabella Lundgren is a new acquaintance for me and she adds an extra energy and voice that is absolutely magical and made for this genre of music.
The set design is simple but so stylish with a bar in one corner, a sofa in the other and the band positioned on stage the whole time. Effective in creating the feeling of a club gig and closeness.
Rat Pack Rhapsody is a feel-good musical and you leave the City Theatre full of energy, humming That’s Life and the smile stays with you for a long time!
Rat Pack Rhapsody runs until November 25th.
