Gluck's dream of creating a new style of opera, distinguished by classical simplicity and dramatic integrity, was exquisitely realised in his setting of the Orpheus story. Climaxing in the much-loved aria J'ai perdu mon Eurydice, his dramatization of Orphée’s descent into the underworld in pursuit of his wife Eurydice stands as a moving testament to the power of music. Conducted by CTO Associate Music Director Tim Murray, Matthew Wild's new production will showcase the extraordinary talents of the Cape Town Opera Chorus, using movement and poetic imagery to create a new vision of this haunting myth.
