He was born on February 17, 1949, in New York City and grew up in suburban Long Island. Scardino attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied theater and film.
Scardino began his career in the late 1960s as an actor, appearing in a number of off-Broadway productions. He made his Broadway debut in 1971 in the musical "King of Hearts."
